Read through most of the posts prior to the past week or so. Lots of positives. Some people asked for opposite thoughts. I actually think that the Hawaii area is one of the more positive areas on this site.

Some of the positives for me:

1) The diversity of cultures.
2) The amazing beauty. Where I live....it is possible to have views of snow-capped mts and the ocean all at the same time. I can see the mtn top from my lanai when there are no clouds.
3) I get along better with my family when I see them less often. I've always been one to desire travel, but my family is content in their small town on the East Coast. It works for us.
4) New experiences always possible.
5) I can dress casually for most situations. Very rarely wear business suits. Not that I mind when I have to, but it's nice to have the option. No more hosiery, layers, obsession with fashion trends--unless I want to! Much prefer my feet in the sand and a swim suit.
6) I meet the most interesting people here...from so many places and histories.
7) No snow. No driving in ice.
8) The opportunity to travel to places beyond Hawaii more easily. I haven't yet, but will once life slows down a bit. Much to look forward to.
9) The beach, the beach, the beach.....and putting my feet in the sand at the beach......did I mention the beaches?? There are still quite a few I have yet to visit.
10) I like Honolulu, at least when I lived there, I liked living on the out-skirts of the city. Now that I'm on the Big Island, I like the space and ease of getting things done. I have everything I need. And it's such a short trip to visit HNL that I hardly miss it.
11) I love it when friends and co-workers share fresh fruits, etc from their own yards. Or grandpas house.... Farmers markets are great too. We have a pineapple I am about to slice that a friend brought over last night. We give away oranges. Someone in the office is always bringing in something...avacados, rambutan....
12) Good sushi, kalua pig and rice, pho soup.
13) Many people here are still very connected to the land. It is good to know that, even though I live in town. (I do respect their concerns and believe that those with responsibility for decision-making must protect their interests.)
14) The music...even if it's just a young person walking through the park with a ukulele. Or the drum circle that practices in town some evenings.

One of my favorites: MySpace.com - Jake Shimabukuro - HONOLULU, Hawaii - Acoustic / Jazz / Experimental - www.myspace.com/officialjakeshimabukuro or visit his website at: || JAKE SHIMABUKURO || Check him out for a contemporary twist on ukulele music. Easier on mySpace, but his website is fun too. Listen to at least one whole song...he's pretty amazing. You often see his name and the word "virtuoso" in the same sentence. Here is a link to an article: Jake returns to 'Ukulele Festival roots - The Honolulu Advertiser

There is so much more....

Wow,
Thanks a lot! I knew that I would love living in Hawaii, but some of my friends and family were saying that I will come back soon. The weather is the main factor for me. Always dreamed of living in a place where I don't have to dress in layers and drive on ice...
I have visited Hawaii every year in the last 5 years. Moving this November with an attitude to stay. Positive reinforcement is greatly appreciated!

I'm living in Seattle. I'm cold. I'm wet. It's dull, drab and grey all the time. The people are rude and unhappy. We haven't had a summer in 18 months. At least in Hawaii I know how to treat Haole' rot. I don't know how to get rid of mould growing on my feet...
Hawaii is.... how you say.... da kine! ???? Platelunch... 'onolicious'... The flowers Wahine wear in their hair make your heart melt... the fragrance in the air in it'self is enough for me to say 'adios mainland and good riddens'...

The Plumeria trees right off my lanai have this overpowering fragrance when they're going off, absolutely wonderful!!! 5 minute walk to the beach, for a nice swim or go paddling at Kamaole 1, maybe chase some whales next month. Plate lunch is an absolute must, but you have to include poi. My employees, when working in Kalihi on Oahu, would go to Masa's on Liliha every now and then for plate lunch. Masa's Massive plate lunch was their favorite. Teriyaki beef, fried shoyu chicken, pork strips, rice, (two scoops), macaroni and potato salad, bit of lomi salmon and local sliced onion with some sea salt, all for about 5 bucks. Only drawback, after eating all this, the guys were hardly capable of working...... Only in Hawaii. Heck, I'm goin out right now to get plate dinner, talked myself into it!

Aloha

translation for those of you who don't know pidgin: sorry, brother, masa's no longer exists. and, jungjohann, don't forget the ahi poke!

positives: beaches, poke, laulau, kalua pig, pho (anything thai or vietnamese is good), the weather (although it's been very humid these last few days), korean food, any type of plate lunch (i can't eat these anymore), my lot up at mauna loa estates, my significant other, my 4 dogs and 4 cats, rainbow bread (from hilo), big island candies (ooh so yummy. don't eat too much of these, too addicting), fruit, sharing with neighbors. did i mention food? food, food , food (all kinds), diffferent cultures, etc. this is hawai'i. there's so much more, but i have food on my mind because i haven't eaten dinner yet.

Well, I don't live in Hawaii yet, but I'll add the reasons I'm planning to move next summer:

- the weather. try upstate NY (I did for 24 years), then decide. (see also, outdoor activities, below)

- not having to wear hose & heels (I'm not kidding, this is a biggie for many of us professional women). seriously, I saw a funeral notice in the Garden Island news the other day, that said "casual attire". gotta love that.

- the slower, more laid-back pace of life (I experienced this on Barbados, as well, when I was a teen).

- my BFF is there (my sister), and my son's BFF (his cousin); we're taking my mom, who is another good friend. I'll be approx. the same distance from my bro, who's on the west coast. Only two or three good friends left behind, and with the internet and cell phones, you're never really out of touch anyway.

- the food (lots about that already on here). Including outdoor barbecue, 24/7/365 (my husband jokes about being an "extreme barbecuer" because he'll do it outside until he has to knock ice off his sandals - none of that on Kauai!)

- a great school for my son (Island School, on Kauai)

- outdoor activities (follows from weather). I love to snorkel (may learn SCUBA), swim, hike, bike, find geocaches, archery, and more things I have yet to discover, I'm sure. The time when such things can be done around here is SO short.

I'm sure there are more...

Kani,
what you mean Masa stay pau already? Why is it that all the good old spots for plate lunch are disappearing. We had Azekas and Sudas, (famous for ono chow fun), here in Kihei, now both pau. Was amazed to find that Kitagawa's in Makawao on Maui is still going. Used to go in there for breakfast when working upcountry, old man Kitagawa would be in the kitchen, making up his famous teriyaki sauce, secret ingredient was Crown Royal, a little went into the teriyaki sauce, and quite a bit went into old man Kitagawa!!! I think my favorite thing about Hawaii after all these years is the people, the food, the ocean, and all the old stories.....kahiko kaao.

Aloha and okolemaluna

Some things I love:

Being able to get up in the morning (early) and go outside in a pair of shorts and t-shirt for a walk. It's lovely in the morning.

I like the birds - some might say they are annoying, but I love all their "talk", it is a very tropical sound.

Seeing the beautiful coastline/ocean throughout the day even when I am doing the most mundane things like dropping off my husbands dry cleaning or going to fill the car with gas.

Lots of new and interesting foods to try.

Being able to swim every day of the year.

Cheap travel inter-island plus kamaaina discounts make it easy to take mini breaks to explore the other islands.

We eat outside on our lanai almost every night and enjoy the light breezes - our formal dining room table is gathering dust.

The diverse culture and people - you can learn something new every day.

My husband loves the business attire over here - pants plus an aloha shirt. He says he will never want to go back to a shirt and tie.

The "kite guy" at our local beach who is out there every weekend with these beautiful kites. He can do the most amazing tricks and is so nice to all the kids who come to watch.

Counting rainbows (when we've had some rain) with my daughter as I drive her to school. Record so far was 4 in our 20 minute drive.

Town - we live on Oahu in the suburbs but love to go into town on weekends, it is always hopping down there. Lots of people, great restaurants - just fun!

All right, I've rambled on here - can you tell we are loving it?
