The commute might take you a while, but you'll be heading away from the traffic jams, so you'll be able to go the speed limit the entire time. I would suggest staying away from the west side of the island and central Mililani is too hot for my comfort (too far away from the cool ocean breezes). The only other idea is around touristy Hale'iwa - actually, look into some places just west of Hale'iwa around Waialua, I've seen some beautiful condos there.

Hope this helps!
Besides the homeless epidemic and the notoriously labeled unfriendly "Locals", why should one avoid the west side? I in particular have found some of the best deals on townhomes/ condos in Ewa Beach and Makakilo. I wrote a pretty in-depth post on it.

Question Husband to be stationed in Hawaii

I have a question, do you know how long the wait list for on post housing is?? We were only told a few days ago we will be going to Oahu. I definately want on post housing, it will feel safe for me. We are an older couple, never been to Hawaii, I in fact have never lived on Post before. My husband has only recently rejoined active Army, and we have been married a relatively short time, with him in National Guard until now. Any information about housing would be EXTREMELY WELCOME.
Thank you for listening,
New Army Wife

Let me make a new reply here. I can't edit the old one.
I've lived here for two years and the locals are BEAUTIFUL people. Seriously.
I had a hard time because I didn't understand the culture here. Yes, there are those that don't like people from the mainland- but I have experience "aloha" A LOT.
I have grown to love it here and I want to retract what I said when I first moved here.
There were incidences of locals getting violent with some mainlanders, but what needs to be recognized is that you have to give respect if you want to get it.
If you come here with an attitude, you will get one back.
