I see a lot of posts about the ol' employment question, and coming from the mainland it is easier to get a job with specialized skills ... would a CDL be considered one of these specialized skills?

No. Those are a dime a dozen and don't pay well in Hawaii.

Neurosurgeon was more like what I was thinking. Or, some kind of renewable energy specialist.

Only tank or hazmat would be considerd specialized based on license alone. Expereience in heavy equiptment, oversize, wide etc is a plus and will seperate you from the dime a dozen CDL holders. Passeneger bus as in coach drivers with tour or corporate event experience is also a plus.

There are CDL jobs out there, although they don't pay all that well. Not enough to live on by that one job alone if you are trying to live a mainland type lifestyle.

good point that many cdl jobs aren't full time. You have to remmeber that Hawaii have no long haul OTR drivers Also in many places the ability to even have a rig manuever down the streets isn't there so many smaller below cdl limit trucks are used. But like everything if you have something special you increase your odds. I know that Hazmat is a desirable endorsement. Even if the company only needs a hazmat driver twice a week, if there is work for a non hazmat oprator, they will hire the hazamat to do both before hiring one for some work and another for the rest.

Another drawback with driving is frequently your schedule changes all the time so you can't schedule in a second job.
