If you don't like bugs, head for the hills. Far fewer bugs at the higher elevations.

If money wasn't an issue, a house on the hills on the dry side built on piers would be the best solution?

I ask again, how about living on a boat? I've looked for info about that and found that it's hard to find mooring but still Oahu has more choices.

Perhaps a submarine would be your best bet?

All kidding aside - Hawaii is in the tropics. We don't have bug free zones. Bugs and spiders in the house - yep. Bugs and spiders on boats - yep. The big cockroaches fly - you'll freak out.

I'm freaking out with just the thought of it, so yes, that would be guaranteed

I'm an interior design student in Europe. My questions have to do with my curiosity about the lifestyle and issues people have with houses in a tropical island. From what I've read it seems that lots of people think about retiring to Hawaii not considering many things and one of them is the bugs situation.

There isn't a pier or stilts long enough. They get into the walls and live there, even coming in with the material with which they build the house. You can mitigate their presence, but bugs are truly a fact of life here. I'm married to a bug-phobe, and she is adjusting. The geckos are good and keep the bugs under control, so be nice to them.
