First the State and County employees were placed on mandatory furlough. Now they are almost all undergoing a mandatory 5% pay cut. The medical premiums are through the roof $$$. The retirement benefits are ok but the funds are very questionable. There is 21 days vacation and 21 days sick leave after the first year as well as 13 paid holidays. Be aware that the pay for most positions is pretty low, at least when comparered to areas with similar cost of living. Once your in the system and pass probation it is nearly impossible to fire you for any reason due to civil service rules and union contracts. Local government white collar positions seem to pay about 30% less than their counterparts on the west coast. It is what it is.....

Oh forgot to add. All scheduled pay "step" increases guaranteed in contract have been frozen for several years. Also no cost of living increases too. Expect to be making 2008 pay with a 2012 financial situation and costs. Many government employees here are abandoning the employee provided health coverage for that of their spouse or other family member due to the cost. I think statistics show that 30% of the population here works for the government in one form or another.

I know what you mean. I work for the state as well.. the pay is not as good as commercial but maybe a little more 'safer' in some ways. Why govt.. I was in commercial [ACS].. they pay quite good but have to work very long hours on weekends most of the time. If you divide that to the number or hours to days it is not worth it. Most commercial companies now [consulting firms, etc, etc] pay ok but very long hours. Some really do not mind but if you have young ones then.. it is a problem there. The economy is really changing a lot more than ever and I believe jobs outsourced will NEVER come back in some ways even if they say it would.
