Any info. you can give us would be appreciated. I'm a nurse, but only do private duty at the present time.

My husband spent a while in hon, HI growing up and naturally wanted to get back. We spent the last 2 years there in hawaii kai, after leaving northern Ca. I am a nurse and the jobs were scarce. They use a lot of temp. nurse travlers. There is only an occational software/engineer job available. The weather...beautiful. Love the rain and the kona winds...but it got so hot in the summer, that it took a while to dress in the morning, for everything stuck like glue. make sure you are finacially able to get a home with air conditioning . (rare with houses under5K.). House appriciation was wonderful. bought a condo at 3K and 1 year later sold it for 410K. Then bought a home for 525K and 5 months later sold it for 625K. Depends where you are going on the island but even in ritzy hawaii kai there is houlie problems in the middle school system. It still exists big time. MY daughter hated it. When the kona winds die..it is as bad as summers in raleigh, NC. you had better not be a misquito magnet like me. 7am and 4 pm, I had to make sure I was inside. We looked at Kauai after vacationing there for so many years, but lot more expensive, less employment and you had better like rain. Would we go back?.....absolutley...to retire only and only to kauai. Honolulu looked like los angeles and hawaii kai looked like a dry long beach, ca.....every place can be paridise and everyplace has it's problems........

Hello from Illinois!
I was just wondering if living in Hawaii is as great as it sounds?
How difficult was it to establish yourself after you moved to Hawaii from the mainland?

aloha, this is the first time i'm posting something here. I grew up in makaha since 74 and moved to big island in 91. seems a lot of people still want to move here. gas today was 351.9 but you can still get three acres of rainforest between 60 to 80 thou. fern forest is getting better but there is still alot of poverty and alcoholism. some areas are good some areas are not so good. one thing over here is most places you have to pay to have your power brought in even if the poles are there. my portion was 5000.00. if i think i have any information anybody can use i will try to help as i read this thread. a *** hou

HI, I am also from midwest, central IN, and haved lived here 3 years next month. What part of midwest are you from? We are selling out here on the Big Island, cause it is just too diferent for us. We had visited alot, but just can't get past how high prices are for such low quality/selection. Guess the locals are used to it, be can't get used to it.
Our fam/friends can't afford to come visit and we can't afford to go to IN as we had previously planned.
Also, there is not enuf variation of things to do. Guess we are just spoiled!
Having said all that, I WILL miss this place of extremes!!!

Think you have your winds reversed.
Kona Winds: They come from the southeast and replace the trades typically during the winter. They often bring high humidity and rain. Kona winds should not be confused with the Kona area of the Big Island of Hawaii, which has sunny, dry weather.
Trade winds: Usually from the northeast, these breezes keep us cool. They average 12 m.p.h. and are lightest in the winter months. Trade winds are named after the winds that brought merchant ships to the islands.

Hi Carlene and others,
I am new to this forum, having lived on Oahu in the past and love to visit the islands from time to time.
We are hoping to move back to the islands again in the near future.
I noticed that you are from. N. Cal. and know a person from Placerville through a forum on the Big Island. removed
Hope that you enjoy Waianae coast. I was always afraid to live there, knowing that they don't want us haolies taking up there last bit of affordable land and letting them live in peace there. We do ahve a Hawaiian friend that lives there, the family has for many, many years.
To other answer seekers,
Lots of folks questions are already answered/archived for the Big Island on forums like the punaweb dot org forum or the Lanai that I mentioned above. Many subdivisions have home owner associations that give out information on the net and show pictures too.
If you are retired, One of the nicest S. subdivisions in Ka'u district of BI is Discovery Harbour. It is far from large towns and great shopping, but is close to Pahala and Naleahu (sp) so there is some places that you can pick up groceries from there or Ocean view.
Aloha,
Lucy

Hi all. I've been living on Oahu for 5 years now. First 4 years were right in the heart of Waikiki. Now I've moved to Waialua and am finally getting to know the real Hawaii. I'll be glad to help any way I can. Aloha!

Good High Schools in Hawaii?
Aloha to All,
I am a native Californian, but have lived in Washington, Oregon and Hawaii at various times. I am a parent of a high schooler and a college freshman. My stint in Hawaii was before I had children. My question is what is the situation with the high schools in Hawaii? What would be a good location that would be in a safe area, but not too 'rich'? Is there alot of prejudice in the schools towards outsiders? Which high school would you recommend?

We visit Maui every year for two weeks. I think the people of Hawaii are too busy enjoying paradise rather than spend time on their computers.
