Iao Valley
As the guy above posted, iao valley was home to one of the bloodiest battles in hawaii, so there is a strange strong presence there at night. Well, when me and my friends were stupid, curious, and still in high school, we used to go to iao valley with our friends during the summer nights for the thrill because we were bored. well, we heard you could hear the nightmarcher drums during certain phases of the moon so we went one day on a full moon. I ran to the bridge that crosses over the river where it once "ran red" due to all of the dead warriors piled up. Then I heard the nightmarcher drums. To make sure i wasnt imagining it i called over all my friends and they heard it too. when it got louder and faster we all RAN to the van and RACED outta there! My friends said during the next week wierd things were happening at their houses and one of my friends actually had nightmarchers drumming surrounding his house till he said prayer after prayer and it slowly went away. If you're not careful in certain places in hawaii at night spirits follow you home! thats where my next story comes into play.......
Okay, so because nothing followed me and my sister during that first encounter we wanted more thrills like the stupid teens we were. So, me, my sister and jus a couple of friends went as far as we could drive into the valley until we came to the closed gate. It was literally a wierd night to begin with because the valley us almost ALWAYS covered in clouds, but that night there were no clouds and the stars were visible. But the most chicken skin part was the moonlight was shining strongly in the vally with strong winds going through. Me and my friend got out and jus went back to the same ol bridge. Then after about a minute my sister started asking me, " CAN WE GO!? CAN WE GO!?" I was like wait a minute not thinking it of anything but impatience. When we finally drove out of the valley my sister said the reason she wanted to leave quickly was because she felt a strong presence of a femenine jealous spirit staring at her through the rearview mirror. I asked her how she knew it was femenine and jealous but she said she didnt know, she just had a strong feeling. I was like okay and thought it was creepy but forgot about it till that night. I was in bed like the rest of my family about to fall asleep when I swore i heard footsteps around the front part of the house. I got up and checked but everybody was in bed, tried to forget about it, and then fell asleep. The next night We went to bed and all of a sudden my phone started ringing and it said my sister was calling and I was like WHY IS SHE CALLING!? SHES IN THE NEXT DAMN ROOM! Then i picked up and she said,"IM REALLY SCARED!" Her voice sounded shaky and i was like why? She said she heard tapping on her window and thought it might be something else, then it continued and kept going. (There's nothing close enough to our window to tap it) I suddenly got chilled and walked quickly to her room and opened the door. She said a prayer and then we slept in the living room and fell asleep. Honestly, weird stuff kept happening all week. From footsteps to hearing something walking or crawling on our wall when there was nothing there. The next week after the Iao valley trip, i went to oahu to visit my friends. Late one night i got a phonecall from my sister and she was in tears worse then the first time. I was immediately concerned and asked her what was wrong. She told me that she first heard mumbling outside her window. When she first heard it she tried to blot it out hoping it was her imagination. Then it got louder and happened more until it was clearly saying, "Hey! Open your window. Open your window." After that she went under her covers afraid to look at the window. I asked her if it was still happening as we were talking and she said yes. I told her to go and get my dad but she said she was too petrified to move. So i told her id call him in the other room and call her as soon as i get him. Thankfully he was in his office and I told him about it. Then I called my sister and she said that our dad went outside her window to check and said that nobody was there or anywhere around from what he could tell. When I came back a few more wierd things happened till my parents started feeling some kind of strange presence in the house. Then we decided to bless it. So we had one of our church authorities bless the house. While the blessing was in process the screen door rattled unnatrually fast as the wind outside the house picked up. Then it settled and the door stopped standing still. That was the last scary experience me and my family felt.

That is scary. Working on the Makenna Surf condos in 1981, the owner/developer was trying to conceal the fact that there were two Hawaiian burial sites/heiaus bordering the project. Bishop Museum got wind of the deal, and the developer was not allowed to do any excavation etc. in those areas. The developer was a total okolepuka, was always complaining how can they tell me what I can or can't do with my land. Long story short, his unit was on the third floor, right next to the burial site which had now been fenced off and was visited by a kahuna every few days. The developer had his unit specially designed, one of the big changes being that he had a very large jacuzzi built in, it had to be put in place prior to the walls being raised and the roof framed. The day that he was supposed to take occupancy, he did the walk through, and the jacuzzi tub had a 1/2 inch crack running all the way through it. The unit had to be taken apart, jacuzzi removed, and the whole unit reframed. I saw the kahuna, a few days later, leaving the heiau after doing some cleaning up, and he winked at me! Go figure.

Some hikers tried to go from Wailuku all the way across the valley to Lahaina side when I moved here. They were never heard from again. Probably not the best idea to begin with, but CHICKEN SKIN, none the less. We need more stories, don't be shy.

I just remembered a couple other stories,
Okay, my friend was driving with her friends here on maui, they were passing by the plantation area next to Wailuku (jus west of it on the highway) when they saw an old hawaiian woman dressed all in white with long thick white hair. Of course they thought it to be the Legendary Pele so they decided to pick her up so they could avoid any bad curses or whatnot. But something went wrong. My friend all of a suddent lost control of the steering wheel as if something stronger and invisible were driving the car. It swerved and hit a telephone pole. I was confused because pele is supposed to offer a safe passage when picked up, but my friend missed one little detail. If you pick up a woman who looks like pele, always look at her feet. If she has feet, she's pele. If she doesnt have feet and is floating in the air.........DONT PICK HER UP!
The second story is my other friend was hiking up in Haleakala crater and they were on the trail that is so long that you have to camp in the crater. They were outside at night just talking when they heard a slight booming in the distance. They looked to where the switchbacks are and saw lighted torches running SWIFTLY down to the crater. My friend said they were running so fast that each switchback only took like 5 seconds to run past. -Now i've hiked that part, and the switchbacks are so long and tiring it usually takes at least 5 minutes at a steady pace to pass each one.- So my friend and his buddies ran inside the tents. Just as they got in they thought they heard the drumming get louder and louder until they heard spears hitting the areas they were sitting in.....Then after a while of being super scared in the tents the drumming went away. CHICKEN SKIN!

k... the night marchers story I heard took place in Waipio Valley. There are homes and farms down there. This guy hears chanting and drumming really loud outside his window. He goes outside and there's nobody there. Every once in a while he sees a line of torches marching across the valley.
I don't know this guy. He's a friend of my friend's husband and I heard the story when I was in Hilo this past spring.
He told us the story as we were walking at night down a dark dirt road in Ninole - the part of the Hamakua coast just before the gulches. I had chicken skin driving all the way home!!!

This is a mainland story from 1974, shortly before I came to Hawaii. I had been working at a restaurant, the Moss Beach Distillery, as a bartender for a few months. The place had a fairly checkered past. In the 1930's, dignitaries from San Francisco would drive down and rent a room in the nearby hotel, and the booze was flowing freely because of the relative remoteness of the area. A woman would sing at the bar on the weekends, always wore a blue dress and bright red lipstick. She was having an affair with one of the owners, her husband found out, came into the bar one night and stabbed her to death. I was working double shifts for a while, would close the bar down around midnight, wipe everything down, etc. Came in one morning, and there's a shot glass on the bar with red lipstick on it, and a bottle of Bushmills right next to it. I thought it was the Mexican guys living downstairs messing with me. One night, shortly after closing, and checking the dining room, bathrooms etc for any stragglers, I'm sitting at the bar with the dishwasher, having a pau hana and watching TV. Beneath the TV was a mirror that reflected on the entrance to the restaurant, and the dishwasher says "Quien es la chica" pointing at the mirror. There's this young woman, in a blue dress, bright red lipstick, looking at us with a kind of irritated expression, kind of like open the door and let me out of here, her purse held under her arm. I'm thinking, "How did we miss her", turned around same time as the dishwasher did, AND NOBODY THERE!
Never spent late nights there again, and this is the absolute truth, I've got a severe case of chicken skin right now!!!
