There's that one story in Grants Obake book about a young issei who had just come to Hawaii to work in the cane fields. He unknowingly urinated on a Heiau. That night he wet the bed. Following day he pee'd in his pants, bladder was going totally lolo. Was told by some locals that he had to go to the Heiau and wash it with sea salt, problem would be solved. Moral of the story, always use the lua!!

The developer was a total okolepuka, was always complaining how can they tell me what I can or can't do with my land. Long story short, his unit was on the third floor, right next to the burial site which had now been fenced off and was visited by a kahuna every few days. The developer had his unit specially designed, one of the big changes being that he had a very large jacuzzi built in, it had to be put in place prior to the walls being raised and the roof framed. The day that he was supposed to take occupancy, he did the walk through, and the jacuzzi tub had a 1/2 inch crack running all the way through it. The unit had to be taken apart, jacuzzi removed, and the whole unit reframed. I saw the kahuna, a few days later, leaving the heiau after doing some cleaning up, and he winked at me! Go figure.

lol, that's a great story...

k... My mom grew up in Pi'ihonua, a sugar cane camp above Hilo.

One time my grandmother was at the intersection of Manaolana Lane and Waianuenue Ave. This was a looong time ago. Maybe in the 1940's or 1950's. There used to be a general store there and a Buddhist temple. There's a rich person's house behind the general store... maybe it's the plantation manager's house. I don't know. It's up a dark tree shaded hill.

Anyway my grandma was by the general store when all of a sudden she looked up and saw a fireball coming down the driveway from the rich person's house behind the general store towards her. She got the heck outta there and ran back home.

There was a bar/eatery above Kamaole Beach 1 back in the forties. Locals and military personel would frequent the place, it was called Aunty Beckys and was very popular, seeing as it was the only place in town. They served beer, mostly locally brewed stuff, Primo and Hawaiian Royal. Hawaiian Royal came in a very unusual can, kind of like an old style brake fluid can with a twist top. Anyways, Beckys was ultimately torn down, and years later the Kamaole Beach Royale was built on the same spot. Buddie of mine was doing a remodel there in the early 80's, seeing as I lived right up the street, he would stop by every now and then. Comes by one evening, says, "You gotta come down and check this out". I go down to the condo he was remodeling, he had to rip open some walls for plumbing upgrades, and inside this one wall, very neatly stacked, are empty Hawaiian Royal beer cans. Now there's no way that the brewery was still in existence when the condo was built, not exactly a ghost story, but a strange one none the less.

Glen Grant, who died in 2003, wrote several books on Hawaiian ghost stories, and conducted "Honolulu Ghost Walks". I went on one of the latter about ten years ago, and it was one of the most memorable evenings of my life! Serious Chicken Skin for several hours. I'll tell about it here some time.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Glen Grant:

Hank,

I'm anxious to hear about your experience with the ghost walk. I've done ghost tours in other cities, but never experienced anything unusual.

My company was doing a project, Lokahi Greens, mauka of the old Ewa sugar mill in 1999. I'ld drive out there when on Oahu, check on the guys, and actually work once in a while, hanging cabinets and doors. Anyways, I was really strapped for cash, was owed well over 100 grand by one general contractor, and was starting to stress out. Leaving the project one afternoon, I'm driving past the old post office, an elderly local woman is trying to cross the road way in front of me, she's having a hard time navigating the median, and falls down. A few cars in front of me actually drive around her!! I stop, help her up, ask her where she lives, get her into my car, and drive her to her home. Walked her to her door, she was pretty shaken up, but kept on saying, "God will bless you young man, God will bless you", she even gave me a hug when I left her off. Get back to my car, cel phone is going off, it's one of the contractors that owes me, message is, " Your check is ready to be picked up". Check was for around $120,000.00, and finally put me in the black. Not a ghost story, but the mana of the Islands is pretty amazing sometimes..

Aloha and okolemaluna

kani-lehua will become famous soon enoughkani-lehua will become famous soon enoughkani-lehua will become famous soon enough
one creepy, chicken skin story i know is: many years back, my cousins were playing around with an ouija (spelling) board during a storm. the thing you put your hands on landed on the letter L, they put the box cover on and all the lights went out. me, i'm too much of scaredy cat to play with that.

the only other story is that my SO's father's favorite flower was the gardenia (mine, too). he was dying of cancer. the day he died we were called at work and needed to take things to a storage room. low and behold, no gardenias in sight and i could smell the distinct fragrance around the storage room. as soon as we stepped inside the house, he took his last breath. this man used to wear a white t-shirt everyday and for several months after his passing, we would see a white shadow near the bathroom that only he used.
