Thinking about moving to Hawaii? Get in line and fill this out…
Thinking about moving to Hawaii? Get in line and fill this out….. I thought I start this thread because there seems to be a flood of people wanting to move to Hawaii. I figured this would be great for us who want to move but would also like to see what other possible movers are thinking.
KEEP IT SHORT, SWEET, AND TO THE POINT!!
1) Current City and State =
2) Why do you want to leave =
3) Where In Hawaii and Why =
4) 2nd and 3rd Place States =
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving =
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? =
2) Why do you want to leave = My spouse's employer closed and he got a fabulous offer in HI
3) Where In Hawaii and Why = Big Island because it has many similarities to our current island, almost the same latitude, rural setting
4) 2nd and 3rd Place States = wherever he got a great job offer if this job hadn't come through
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = My dogs' titers...my spouse starts his job next week and I'll follow in August after their titer tests have aged sufficiently
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? = due to the high cost of getting stuff off this island, across the mainland, and to HI, we decided to rent a furnished home and get rid of EVERYTHING including cars. We're coming with three suitcases and a dog each, and using USPS to mail just a very few other things like a couple dozen books and our musical instruments and my sewing machine. We are really excited about the fresh start.
2. Recently divorced, wife got the house and I miss Honolulu.
3. Oahu. Spent 4 years there and left after graduation in 1996.
4. Employer has corporate office in Florida so I could transfer there.
5. Moved out of my house and now am saving over $900 monthly because no longer have a mortgage. Now living with family for free and can save most of my paycheck. Once get all bills paid off and have a good amount of cash saved up I will make the move. I am on a five year plan but I hope to move sooner.
6. I just don't like the mainland and miss everything about Hawaii. I have no delusions about what Hawaii is and is not. I am not looking for paradise just the place that makes me happy.
2)Why do you want to leave = I want to Kitesurf more often without driving 3.5hrs to the beach
3)Where In Hawaii and Why = starting in Oahu, likely to have more jobs
4)2nd and 3rd Place States = Hawaii only
5)What’s currently holding you back from moving = saving some money up now for the "unexpected"
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? = a lot of people are talking a lot of junk about moving there where i live, but they can have this place in their comfort zone, i want to live.
2) Why do you want to leave = My wife is from Hawaii and is terribly homesick, and I've been to Hawaii several times and love it. We don't want to flee Oregon (which is a wonderful place) -- we want to go to Hawaii -- so it would be a lateral move rather than a step up for us.
3) Where In Hawaii and Why = Probably Hilo because it's my wife's home town and is affordable, but we'd prefer Honolulu because of the culture and thngs to do.
4) 2nd and 3rd Place States = Oregon and Washington
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = My wife is 8 years from retirement at a well-paying job with good retirement benefits, so it makes financial sense for us to stay here until then.
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? = I developed an inexplicable obsession with Hawaii at age 12, which lasted until I was about 18. I devoured books on the subject, bought Don Ho albums, and watched Hawaii Five-0 religiously. None of my friends or family had been there, nor did they have any interest in Hawaii. I didn't go until I was 36, and it turned out to be everything I'd imagined and more. When my wife-to-be showed me the real Hawaii, as opposed to the touristy stuff, I felt totally at home with the culture, even though I'm originally a Northeasterner for whom all the hugging and elaborate politeness were foreign. My wife's relatives say my soul must have been born in Hawaii.
3) Where In Hawaii and Why = Family lives on O'ahu.
4) 2nd and 3rd Place States = None.
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = Saving, saving, saving up $$$ and waiting till we retire. Well, semi retire. I will probably take a part time job but only because I like to keep busy.
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? = We could move now, but would rather wait until things are even more secure financially for us. So for now, we spend about 3 weeks a year there(10 days on O'ahu, 10 days on an other island). Our goal is to move by October 2019.
1) Current City and State = Riverside, CA (2nd home in Princeville, HI)
2) Why do you want to leave = I am completely obsessed with Hawaiian culture and Music. I was married on Waimanalo Beach in Oahu, and spent numerous months (cumulatively) over the years on Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
3) Where In Hawaii and Why = I bought my retirement home in Princeville Kauai last November 2011 (paid in full)
4) 2nd and 3rd Place States = None
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = I am currently renting my Kauai home and will be there full time in about 15 years when I retire. I can only make the money I do here on the Mainland.
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? = I'm one of the lucky ones, who has been successful enough in my career to buy a home on Kauai. I also worked my butt off for it and knew that the time to buy was now; even though I won't be there for many many years.

1) Alaska
2) Can't do another winter here
3) Big Island, lower cost of living, smaller population, bigger island
4) Hawaii and Hawaii
5) Nothing. Have a tentative move date
6) Nope
2) Why do you want to leave = Grew up on O'ahu. Moved to the Big Island in 1992 where my wife and I got married, had two children and built our first home. Although my wife and I had great jobs (me-Fire dept., her-school teacher) we decided it would be best to move to the mainland for the kids and made the move in 1999.
3) Where In Hawaii and Why = We have four acres we will be retiring to in Volcano. Love the place like nowhere else.
4) 2nd and 3rd Place States = You're kidding right?
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = Putting two teenagers through college. Earning our pensions. Getting old...
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? = It was so very hard to leave Hawaii. I could not even listen to Hawaiian music for a couple of years because it made it worse. The move has been so very good for the kids and I know we did the right thing. I'm glad we made our sacrifices and I now look forward to the day I land in Hilo and once again drive up the hill to Volcano knowing that I will not be leaving.
2) Why do you want to leave = Husband moved to Oahu 3/3/12, just waiting for our townhouse here to sell and son to finish first year of college. My dad lives on Oahu most of the year and I also lived on Oahu when I was 8.
3) Where In Hawaii and Why = Honolulu
4) 2nd and 3rd Place States =
5) What’s currently holding you back from moving = Selling our townhouse in a down market
6) Anything else you want to tell us that we don't know? = Husband moved for a job, I will have to find one once my son and I move. I expect my son to work part-time and complete his second year of college and help us out Already warned my husband he maybe living with us until he is 35 - LOL
