Default Floridians comparing FL to HI

This is an interesting thread:
Anyplace in Florida like Hawaii?

It's on the Florida forums. Of course nothing in Florida is anything like Hawaii. But, it sounds like Sarasota might be a nicer one among them, that seems to be getting some recognition.

Anyways, interesting thread for anyone curious.

Posted in that thread and well said by OptimusPrime69

"no, theres no places in florida like hawaii.

Florida is flat....basically flat all over the state with the exception of a few mounds of dirt that go above 10 ft sea level....

it's also a lot hotter in the summer months...no tradewinds in florida!
cooler in the winter too. Hawaii does not get cold snaps like all of florida experiences....so really there is no place in fla like hawaii.

if u want hawaii, go to hawaii."

Someone in the Florida thread said Florida is tropical. Well, NO it's not. It doesn't drop into the 40's in the tropics. There's not much more I can say.

Here's the main difference... you can drive to Florida. You can't drive to Hawai'i.

Think about it... that difference explains a LOT!

Of course, it does get into the 40's in Hawaii, and actually to much lower temperatures the higher up you go. That is a big difference, we have a wide variety of climates here given our mountainous islands, though no, only extreme south florida can be termed 'tropical' and even that is very unpleasant compared to our lowlands. However, the differences, culturally and politically, between Florida and Hawaii (especailly islands other than Oahu) are so great (with florida being such a concentration of everything that is bad about the mainland with an overdeveloped toxic waste dump for environment) that I find it insulting people would even try to compare.

It is hard for many to comprehend, but in the tiny little land mass that comprises the Hawaiian islands, we have all but two of the world's 13 climate zones, arranged in sometimes tiny microclimes. My place near the Kilauea volcano is tropical alpine rainforest, green and lush, receiving 100+ inches of rain a year on average, and mostly being shirtsleeves warm, but in winter months the temperature at night often approaches freezing. Three miles south of me it's arid desert, brown and scruffy. In Waimea (Kamuela) one side of the town is "wet" and one side of the town is "dry," with completely different weather systems.

Florida, by contrast, is not tropical. It's just hot and muggy and unpleasant.

I didn't read all the responses in that thread, but seeing as I have lived in both FL and HI I can say that they are absolutely not alike whatsoever.

Hawaii is much more expensive, but doesn't have snakes or alligators...

I dunno, if you go down to the very tip of the Florida Keys, there is a place that is rather reminiscent of Waikiki. Maybe it is just an ocean based tourist town verses another ocean based tourist town, but Key West has a flavor similar to parts of Waikiki. Maybe because all the touristy kitsch that is sold is all from the same place in China?

One of the more interesting things in Florida I noticed were the swirls of vultures circling over the dumps. They were the highest points of land, maybe they caught an updraft there? (Bwahahahahah!)

What on Earth? Florida has some of the cleanest air in the U.S. Don't know where you got your information from. Your probably mistaken us for California.
