Default rafting swimming etc in ditches

is it common on maui or other islands to do such activities? it's so sad that two teenagers got sucked into the siphons and drowned. i've never heard of this before. please clue me in.

I saw that article on the Star Bulletin website. Seems the siphon is a way for them to get water to go uphill. Very sad....

I live in Indiana and something like this happens here every time it floods. The kids always think it will be a fun idea to jump on in and have a swim. Probably even more tempting to them here since we are a good 5 hour drive from any kind of beach. Here they usually get sucked into the culverts that go under roads. A lot of tree branches get stuck in there and they get tangled up in them.
