Lot in Leilani Estates
Greetings to all. I'm a new member; I just signed in @10 minutes ago. I'm hoping someone can give me a little info on Leilani Estates. I own an undeveloped lot on Malama Street (parcel ID 130250030000). Is this considered to be a desireable location? Does this lot have an ocean view? I last saw this lot in 1970 when I was 10 years old so needless to say I know nothing about it. Any info at all regarding this lot would be greatly appreciated. I'm exploring the possibility of building a home in late 2008 or early 2009 and relocating. I hope to visit Leilani Estates sometime after the first of the year--January or February. Thankyou very much for your time and I hope to hear from someone soon.

Leilani Estates is often called "Puna's premier subdivision". With one acre lots and many nice, newer, well-landscaped homes, the subdivision has a lush feel that is very calming and peaceful.
Here is the Community Association site. It has a good bit of practical information, including some basics about the CC&Rs and building in the subdivision:
Leilani Community Association
From the site:
History
The Leilani Estate subdivision was formed in 1964. The name "Leilani" in Hawaiian means "royal child" or "heavenly lei". The Hawaiian name for the Leilani Estate subdivision area is Keahialaka. A very old chant in Hawaiian references the name Keahialaka...
Geography
...According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.8 km˛ (4.2 mi˛), all land. A U.S.G.S. topographic map of the Leilani Estates subdivision can be found (see site for link). An aerial photo of the subdivision can be found at maps.google.com. Here on the website, you can also find a subdivision map showing the lots and a complete street map.
Leilani Estates is in Lava Zone 1...which raises issues with some lenders and with getting insurance...but folks are still building there and moving in at a very steady pace!

Although I'm currently off-island, I looked up your parcel. It's what's known as a "spaghetti lot" that's 100' x 436'. It's fairly close to Kumukahi Street and if I remember the topography of Malama St. correctly, you might have a slight ocean view from the southern part of your lot. Your neighbor to the east (Mr. Holland) has a small cottage on his parcel that was built in 1987 and also owns the lot to his east. Last year, the owners of one the two adjacent "square lots" (the Ludricks) took out a construction permit and cleared their lot. The Florida-based owner of the other adjacent "square lot" (Mr. Foster) has left his lot undeveloped. When I'm back on-island, I should be able to provide you with more details about your lot.
Hope this helps,
Jonah K

To Jonah K: Thankyou very much for your response--I just read it today!! I'm very "green" when it comes to computer competency and thought my messages were being lost in "cyberspace"--that's why I basically asked the same question again about 5 minutes ago!! Thanks again.

Looks like about five miles from the center of Leilani Estates. Do you know what street your parcel is on?

Why do people buy land without having viewed it first? Not insulting, just questioning

I think the biggest reason here in Hawaii is because so many people dream of running off to an island. Others just want a piece of paradise, any piece.

I was fortunate enough to inherit this property but I do agree; Buying property sight unseen wouldn't make a lot of sense. HankDfrmSD----the property is on Malama Street.

Aloha meanser, I live 4 blocks from your lot, it's a nice area, old growth forest. Your lot backs up to a forest reserve, which makes it more desireable.

Hi Meanser,
Have you tried looking at the Google map in "Satelite" View? That should give you a better idea of what's around it. You can drag the map up and down your street till you get to your lot. Like this:
