Other kinds of racism on mainland: Japanese foreign students are told not to take more than $10 downtown because they are targeted specifically by local thieves.
Nasty remarks all over the internet about the white pioneers who settled the US, even though many are part-Indian and their DNA is showing it. And Mexicans often make these remarks even though they are part white (Spanish).
Hawaii is thought to be a racist place FOR WHITES. I have heard that so often.
Everyone always has the choice to return to their native lands (where ever that is), rather than expect a new place to welcome them.
The Native Hawaiians are probably the most hateful toward all visitors. Let's face it.
After that, probably those who have to compete for jobs from newcomers may resent them. I don't think most people just hate a skin color. They hate the economic influences, cultural changes, etc.

What do you mean by "native hawaiians?"
I think the term "hawaiian" is being used loosely here...Mainlanders often refer to people in hawaii as "hawaiian" in reference to locality as opposed to ethnicity. I was born and raised in hawaii but i am not hawaiian by any means....hmm not sure if this makes sense...
To lump true hawaiians and those of us who just happen to live here into one homogenous category isn't right...I don't hate all visitors...visitors fuel our economy....
It is true that Hawaii has stereotypes....but show me a place on earth that doesnt! Everyone is so hung up on "hawaii hating all outsiders" which is an exageration.
Like any place in the world, hawaii has good and bad....just unfortunate that we all dwell on the negative stuff.

Just a question... and a suggestion

I'm trying to understand why people feel this way about topics which (I assume) make them feel "uncomfortable."
As an analogy, I've worked with people in the Domestic Violence/Assault/Abuse arena. Some people who have been the victim of Domestic Violence don't wish to talk about it, and I respect that view (although private counseling is ALWAYS the best option!) and I would never forcibly insist that someone discuss private pain in a public forum. Some states go so far as to allow victims multiple options to confront their alleged perpetrators in alternative means (for example, video recordings, statements, screened direct and cross examinations) because of the pain involved.
The veiw I find hard to stomach, however, is a general public attitude, or the attitude of policy makers to "pretend" such attrocities do not exist... Hidden within their justification that it's "uncomfortable topic," one best left out of the politeness of every day life, is that they just want it to go away. Barring the disapearance of it, they would rather avoid it completely....
But the problem with the scenario is that things don't GO AWAY by pretending they don't exist.
If something is offensive to an individual, such as the topics of racism or domestic violence, s/he need not speak or read about it. They can avoid any imposition upon their individual delicate constiutions by simply avoiding the topic....
To paraphrase a Supreme Court Justice in a late 60's case about Constitutional freedom of speech [a young man wore a denim jacket into a court house, which on the back was emblassoned with the word "F*** the Draft!"], the Court found the man had a right to make his opinion know about the draft. On the aspect of whether or not others found it offensive, one Justice stated : "Of course, you always have the choice to simply avert your eyes.."
In the spirit of that, perhaps we should avert our eyes...
Unless of course, conscience dictates, or human desency is an inate part of one's personal identity. Then perhaps, we should we should take a good hard look at ourselves and our society. Maybe we should talk about the evils in the world....

It's because this damned topic has been beaten to death on this forum and there have been numerous topics locked by the moderator because of such. The individual asked a question about how blacks were treated, and then it turns into a preach fest. I've never once been the target of racism ever, no matter if I visited an area that I was a huge minority, whether I was in Hawaii, a foreign nation, or wherever. So talking about this does not make me feel uncomfortable one bit. It irritates me because we keep bringing up the exact same subject time and time again, reveal no new answers, opinions or facts.

Yes, he did, and people are trying to answer.

Then perhaps you're not the best person to answer his question...

Apparently the questioner does not have your insight into past discussions. He has only posted twice, which leads me to beleive he's not been here very often. If you would like to offer him statistical facts or opinions which you consider "new", you should do so.
If his question is "new" to him, then perhaps he should be allowed to ask, and further, he should be given the courtesy of answers (and preferably answers from people who HAVE experienced racism...).
If an individual finds such questions and answers tedious, then they should simply not click on the thread...

wow! i strongly disagree with these statements. it's these types of general statements that get native hawaiians/part hawaiians riled up.
our culture is alive through dance, language and music. although, these are very important to us, the land is the greatest issue followed by federal recognition of the NATIVE HAWAIIAN RACE. do NOT include me in, "the native hawaiians are probably the most hateful towards visitors" group! hawai'i's economy is most definitely fueled by tourism. there's no getting around it.

i do agree with you that the "racism" issue is been brought up way too many times. if a new member wants information on this particular subject, could you/would you please use the search button on the above toolbar?!
