We recently spent a most lovely 2 weeks in Hawaii (1 week in Kona, and 1 in Maui). Loved the beaches, mountains, food, weather, people... Can't think of a more idyllic place to live. Which prompted our son to wonder where do Hawaiians go for vacation? Y'all are already in paradise!

Well, you probably will get Las Vegas as an answer.

Other islands, or the mainland to see family.

Family is a compelling reason for sure! I never expected to see Vegas on the vacation list though. That's probably one of the last places I'd want to visit. The search for snow is also surprising Thanks all!

Vegas isn't called the 9th island for nothing!

On Maui weekends, they are camped at the beach parks on the West Side.
When I was on the BI a couple of trips ago, we were staying at Waikoloa Colony Villas, and it seemed like half of Hilo had come over for the 4th of July. One or two condos had been rented, and maybe 50-75 people showed up at the pool in front of our condo and occupied all of the BBQs all evening, as well as the pool. After waiting for a while, we gave up and went out to dinner. The next day, we heard from residents that this happens every year at many Waikoloa complexes.

If you are on the neighbor island, Oahu for shopping for that quick weekend get away.
Or if there's cheap tickets, Vegas, we have lots of retirees who like to go there 2-3 times a year, and many others who have families or second homes in Vegas.
Another is ski areas like Colorado. And of course Disneyland.
I heard Lake Tahoe during whale season since they want to go ride jet skis, and they can't here during that time.

I guess folks in other states don't get that question: Where do people from IN, TX, MS go on vacation? But an inquiring junior visiting a vacation state has to get a proper answer.

I would say that my vacation needs are mostly satisfied when I am able to take my kayak and fishing gear to the bay for a couple of hours whenever I feel like it and the farm permits it.
