There are private garbage haulers in Puna, but most of us take it to one of the transfer stations scattered arond the district where it is hauled to Hilo landfill. Greenwaste, bottles and soda cans are recycled.

Recycle Hawaii! Welcome to the Recycle Hawai`i Home Page!
Recent article encouraging recycling: Hawaii Tribune-Herald :: Hilo, Hawaii "All 20 of the county-operated transfer stations now feature two bins for mixed recyclables -- one for nonredeemable glass products, such as champagne bottles, and a larger bin for cardboard, box board (what cereal boxes are made of), metal cans (tuna and Spam cans) and certain plastics (such as milk bottles, liquid detergent jugs and ketchup bottles)......" (Anyone on the BI heard the radio/tv recycle jingle "...it's good for you, it's good for the aina"? That was recorded by local teens in my SOs studio! It's his Hawaii claim to fame with the most air time of any work he has done here.) |
