There are private garbage haulers in Puna, but most of us take it to one of the transfer stations scattered arond the district where it is hauled to Hilo landfill. Greenwaste, bottles and soda cans are recycled.

Recycle Hawaii! Welcome to the Recycle Hawai`i Home Page!
Recent article encouraging recycling: Hawaii Tribune-Herald :: Hilo, Hawaii
"All 20 of the county-operated transfer stations now feature two bins for mixed recyclables -- one for nonredeemable glass products, such as champagne bottles, and a larger bin for cardboard, box board (what cereal boxes are made of), metal cans (tuna and Spam cans) and certain plastics (such as milk bottles, liquid detergent jugs and ketchup bottles)......"
(Anyone on the BI heard the radio/tv recycle jingle "...it's good for you, it's good for the aina"? That was recorded by local teens in my SOs studio! It's his Hawaii claim to fame with the most air time of any work he has done here.)

Just to add to options already offered, but certainly not to endorse it, anyone who lives in a Puna subdivision with vacant lots or drives along Hwy 130 can substantiate the outrageously unaddressed and unmitigated problems associated with illegal dumping.

I agree and it is sad that people do this when the FREE transfer stations are all over the place.

Beware anyone dumping on Waa Waa road and is dump enough to leave names on items I and my friend turn in. What is done about it is questionable. It is all free dumps transfer stations, free garbage in town in barrels, free in gas stations. It isn't like in WA the people giving you tickets for using their dumpster. Free Free Freee it is something I can not understand why not take it to transfer instead of haul to Waa Waa Geesh doesn't take a brain to take to one place to dump garbage or another to throw in woods.
And really how cool and fun it is to burn a car??? really I want to know!

It is to my understanding that there is you just have to pay for it. I take it like the Tahitian told me when the French government tried to make them farm papayas commercially. They said to the government why I have all the papayas here why grow more? The government said to make money. They said why I don't need money? So the French did what they do best ... gave in! ( no offense ) The free dump down the street is cheaper.
All is good

Only a "few" areas have the option of pick up in Puna. You can hire someone to pick up your garbage and haul it however I haven't really heard of anyone reliable. Where I stay and my friends all haul their garbage to dump. It really isn't that big of a deal if you do it regularly.. plus you can recycle in dump- transfer station also. Never had to wait for lines, plus it is free. It is in Pahoa, as each village town has their own transfer station also.
