Apparently the Fukushima thing is out of control. It doesn't mention Hawaii specifically, but looks like the pacific ocean is in a bad way.

I keep making my friends aware but no one is taking it seriously, because the government is not saying any thing.
There is a "Radiation Network " where private individuals like you and I are hooked up with their own Geiger counters automatically up dating the radiation in their area.
Because radiation cannot be distilled out of the water , rain and snow carry it across country depositing it every where.
they have recommendation on the better geiger counters but most of them are out of stock .
I made the mistake of choosing the cheaper one (what I could afford) and I regret it. when I can I am saving for the better unit.pancake type receiver.
Being able to prove with your own equipment what is happening , will go a long way in helping others take the matter more seriously .

poisonous fish would be the least of my concerns, wait until the giant lizards or giant moths or flying turtle monsters start climbing up from the nuclear depths. Mother Nature is big time PO'ed and she's got an axe to grind too.

I'm sorry you missed my post yesterday, in the thread already in progress, debunking this kind of scary-scary story. Notice that your story was written by an attorney, Michael Snyder, who is selling a book, while mine was written by an actual scientist, Kim Martini, PhD, who is a Physical Oceanographer at the Joint Institute for the Study of Atmosphere and Ocean at the University of Washington.

Here's my post: http://www.city-data.com/forum/32795285-post46.html

And here's that link to Dr. Martini's article again.

Executive summary: Will the radiation reaching the West Coast be Dangerous? No. Can I eat fish from the Pacific? Yes

True facts about Ocean Radiation and the Fukushima Disaster | Deep Sea News

In addition, you might notice that from the first item on, your writer, Mr. Snyder, repeatedly bases his arguments on a fallacy... one of the most common fallacies used by the scary-scary industry, and a mainstay of alt.med snake-oil peddlars... that because two things happen in the same time frame, there MUST be a connection. The rebuttal to this fallacy has long been stated as a simple aphorism: Correlation does not imply causation.

Presumably, if this author had heard about the black spots I got on my tomatoes this summer he would have blamed them on Fukushima as well, but that would not have been any more true than anything else he listed, from balding polar bears on down.

Actually, they are. You just aren't paying attention to the right sources of information.

I can't tell you how alarming it is to me that the geiger-counter sellers are making a fortune at the expense of frightened people who have no scientific training, and don't understand what their own data means, but who think that posting it on the internet is the same as doing real controlled research.

It's not like we can afford to eat fish this time of year anyway. Anyone looked at the price of ahi lately? Once New Year' is over, then we can worry about radioactive fish.

Actually, I have a friend with a Geiger counter and she's got a touch of a "chicken Little" sort of attitude so as long as she's not concerned, I'm not concerned.

Tell me about it! I used to think $20 a pound for nice sashimi grade ahi at New Years was a lot, but now? Sheesh! I just read the best stuff at Tamashiro on Oahu is going for $36.95/lb. Personally I opted for a nice ribeye instead.

Do we get a discount if it's a radioactive fish, now that's what I want to know! Hmm, a ribeye sounds nice! I'm not sure what's for dinner, probably more leftovers although I think we are almost about done with those. We'd just finished up Thanksgivings leftovers then there were Christmas leftovers. Guess it's time to make New Year's dinner so we can have New Year's leftovers later? Saves tons of time on cooking if you do several days worth at once.

Actually, I was concerned about radioactive contamination awhile back. This was right after Fukushima and way before any effects would have gotten near. There has been a lot of research from Three Mile Island and Chernobyl and although not good, radiation hasn't been as nasty or as widespread as they had originally thought.

I'm not going to go back and recreate that research for folks since they also have access to the internet and can find out for themselves. But, folks that are alarmists and don't check out who is putting out the websites and data they access are going to have a pretty skewed view of things. And, depending on how you do your internet searching, you can get skewed results, too. Searching "radiation damage" will get much different results than "effects from radiation" or "radiation research centers".
