Lived on the Big Island as a teen, but never as a tax paying adult !
If I build a small house on my own lot, will I be taxed at the cost to build, or the estimated market value ? Makes a beeg difference ! What about real (personal) property tax on things like cars and trucks. Some states tax the value of your cars, boats, motorhomes, etc. almost like a "Luxury Tax" every year. Appreciate your feedback !

Your property will be taxed according to the counties assessed value, which really sucks!! The County of Maui figures my 2 bedroom 2 bath 900 sf condo is worth over 600K,, which is absolute nonsense, but I have to pay the tax according to their evaluation none the less. Vehicles are taxed according to weight, at least they can't screw with the scales!!!!

Aloha

Default Thanks JungJohann

Guess I may have to leave my Excursion on the mainland, it's 7800 lbs.
Maybe a Jeep would be better ! Do you have to "smog" cars on Maui ?
It's another form of taxation where I live, as they tack on state fees every two years when cars get inspected/sniff tested while on a dynamometer.
Aloha, George

I'm confused. Is there some sort of yearly tax on vehicles or are you just talking about the Excise tax?

Vehicle registration tax is based upon the gross weight of the vehicle, heavier the car/truck, the more you pay, I've got a Lotus Elise, weighs about 2000 pounds, and an F150XLT four wheel drive truck, weighs at least 4700 pounds, the truck is way over twice the registration cost than the Lotus. And yea, the vehicle tax is once a year, and GE tax is only if you are in business here, 4%, think the most I ever paid in one year was about $60,000.00, what a great deal, wonder how the State invested it!!!!!

Aloha

Heh the most amazing thing I read here was that they tax you once per year on your vehicle. Amazing Btw so how much is your tax on the Lotus?

Eh Brav, you actually got me wondering how much the Elise tax was, its $90.21 per year. Would have to check on the truck. Thought all states had annual renewal registration fees for cars/trucks? Guess I've been here too long........ and oh yea.............GO U OF H WARRIORS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aloha and okolemaluna

Default Taxes and Car Registration

I think some of the replies in this thread may have confused someone from the Mainland.

When you buy ANYTHING in Hawaii, (Car, truck, food, beer) you pay an exise tax. 4% Plus an extra 1/2% on Oahu.

Hawaii has a registration requirement for cars, trucks, every year. Just like the mainland. Here are some comparisons for my two cars in California and one in Hawaii

Calif:
2000 Cad $127
1976 Volvo $49
Hawaii
2003 Honda $188.75

Looks comparable to me.

Hank

Instead of a biennial "smog" check like in California, vehicles in Hawai'i are required to have an annual "safety inspection" that pretty much consists of honking the horn and checking for any burnt-out lights. However, smog checks in California aren't required if the vehicle is a hybrid, built before 1975, diesel-powered, a motorcycle, or six or less model years old. Hawai'i, on the other hand, requires safety checks for all vehicles (regardless of age or type) as a prerequisite to registration.

Fortunately, annual safety checks in Hawai'i are usually less expensive ($15-25), compared to biennial smog checks in California ($35-70).

Well, where I live it's a flat fee for each vehicle each year (every two years rather). When you said 'tax' I was surprised. But seeing how the tax is the actual vehicle registration, it makes sense now.
