Aloha-
My forum friends are all correct.
In my opinion, the most important thing you can do is visit (at least) 4 islands. Then chose one island: spend real/on-site time experiencing all of the island. It took us many visits and a lot of travel to decide the Big (Hawaii) Island is for us, but your results may vary.
There's more to consider than food, electric, water, etc. In our case property taxes dropped from $10,000/year to $3,500/year in Hawaii: somewhat offsets Hawaii's state tax. Our property insurance also dropped about the same amount, but part of that is because we don't live on the water now.
Water is expensive in our area and we like organic foods; thus, the cost of groceries is high.
I believe you can get more house/land for the money on the Big Island, but it depends on your price range and where you want to live on the island.
Do not make the move without visiting first (more than two weeks). This is the most valuable advice you will ever receive; be it Hawaii or hell, visit FIRST!
