Is it possible in Hawaii and is it safe? I've never visited any of the islands and am thinking of planning a trip for next year sometime. I like to go to places that are off the beaten track, but also visit some of the Must-see Sights. Is there an island / town / resort that's better for single women?

A lot of single woman vacation in Hawaii of all ages - especially Oahu and Maui but you'll see them on all islands.

It is very safe. Although like anywhere, use good judgement.

Maui is relatively safe. Several women have disappeared recently but they were probably cases of domestic murder.

I think you'd be safe on any island, but would not recommend going "off the beaten track" by yourself. There are plenty of must see sights that are all very safe. If you like to do some of the things that are less touristy, then go with a small tour group.

I'm a woman and live on the Big Island (aka Hawaii Island) and I've stayed on Ali'i Drive in Kona by myself. There's so much tourist activity there that is is safe, even at night. I suggest that if you come to the BI that you do a one-day circle island tour. It would give you a good overall view of the island, plus you wouldn't have to do the driving yourself!

For a single woman. Any Island you choose you would be safe. Each Island has its own secrets. Just beware of off the beaten tracks and common sense is always a good idea.

Would sign up for tours. That way you can see the Island, rather than driving by yourself. You might miss something, and it is less taxing.

Would try a couple of Islands if you have the time. That way you can see the difference between the two.

For resorts check out Fodors Travel Guides. They have are good on giving advice on planning vacations. Here is the 2013 top 10 Hawaiian-resorts on all Islands. Hope this helps for resorts.

Like others have said, Hawaii is pretty safe, even for a single woman. Just use common sense since bad things can, and have happened to visitors in the past, but those are rare. As for islands to visit, I'd say Oahu for sure and at least one of the neighbor islands if time permits. Must see attractions include Pearl Harbor, Bishop Museum (since it's unique), Diamond Head, Iolani Palace, Hanauma Bay (if you like snorkeling), and the volcano if you visit the Big Island. As for taking a tour vs driving or taking the bus, I'd say it's up to you what you feel comfortable with. Some people can't stand being on a tour with other tourists, some are fine with it. Some like to drive, some don't. Being Hawaii is made up of small islands, no place is really that far from where you'll be staying.
