I checked into my pups vet records and she will have a long time until she can get another rabies shot. She doesn't even need it because shes a hybrid they have higher immunities to certain diseases and thats something that doesn't affect them (from what Ive read) I know they aren't allowed but she looks like a husky and isn't aggressive whatsoever my moms miniature weenie dogs are meaner than her. They actually arent aggressive like everyone says people are just nieve sometimes. Thanks for all the help! Ive been looking into it and I was thinking Honolulu would be the best for me, I like the city life so I figured thats the best place to go. FUNHOUSE have you lived there your whole life? Or moved recently? How do you like it?

what you are saying about the rabies shot. Who told you hybrids don't need to keep up their immunizations? First of all that's not true. They do tend to be a bit hardier than over bred pedigrees BUT please try to understand, that rabies is ALWAYS FATAL to animal and human. Therefore, EVERY state in this country requires regular administration of the shots. There is a 1 year variety and a 3 year variety. Most vets give a puppy the 1 year variety and then the next year they give the 3 year. Some stick with the 1 year shots. Whichever your vet does, the puppy still needs 2 shots AND the Univ of Kansas blood test to prove she has sufficient immunity.
THIS is the law in Hawaii and you are just NOT going to get that puppy into the state without complying. She will sit in a cage at the airport at your expense for months. why are you having such a hard time getting this. It is not good for her. It's cruel and you will have an unsociable, difficult to train dog at the end of it. PLEASE THINK THIS THROUGH. Quote:

Hey there. . . I've read a lot of forums but this one is my favorite and I think the most helpful. I'm trying to transfer to a college on Oahu from NYC. I hear it's extremely expensive and I do have the option of living off campus w/a military buddy of mine if I do get accepted. I have to wait a month or so before I start hearing back from college. I'm so nervous and anxious, and of course excited! I cannot wait!
Good luck to anyone who is planning on moving there! |

I was in Hawaii when I was 18-19, loved it and went on a whim as you said, the only thing was I already had a part-time job lined up there even though I didn't have anything in my pocket. I saved up for a motorcycle and then moved up to North Shore, hit the beaches every single day that year and hung out with the locals. Honolulu is just a bit too touristy, though where you'll most likely find a job and no matter where you live in Hawaii it can get real small. You'll have to definetly visit or have a backup plan. My backup plan was to go to college, which I did at UC-Santa Barbara and being in Hawaii helped me decide where to go for college, near the beach obviously (I'm from Colorado) and I went back to visit once after college and will continue to do so, traveling and seeing the country is a great eye-opener no matter where you end up.

I have saved enough to last me for at least for awhile, but am hoping to get myself a job within 2 months. I hope I meet some fun awesome people.

well well im far past due or an update. Well i moved to waialua on march 3rd to this rly cool house on the north shore. was a mistake, no work on the north shore that could float the rent. so i found work in waikiki renting out mopeds makin some good money, then april 3rd i found a studio to split with an older gentleman for just $500 a month utilities included. april 29th we got another roommate so rent is $370 in waikiki, like $15 a day or $12. Ive met a couple women here which is soooo easy, thank you kuhio ave hahaha. other than that, lookin into gettin a kayak and some snorkel gear. but yeah i found the job on craigslist, called the guy mornin after hisfirst post (he had posted like 8 more times under every catagory), then setup interview for the 25th, got the job a couple hours after the interview. so things are workin out quite well so far. it is expensve, but its do-able. i think things are like 3-4 times more expensive as like a general rule of thumb, so if ur prep'd to be payin like 3-4 times what the mainland average is you should be fine and not shocked. but its phenominal here and hands down is the best choice i could have made for a first time. and i highly recommend it, but only if you have done the research, put in the time, and are prepared. but i wouldnt have traded this for anything.

ONE THING thought i just thought of i am only 19, my needs dnt require much, so i think movin to hawaii is easier the younger you are and the les you require. like i can spend $30-$40 a week on food plus the occasional smoothie, bubble drink, breakfast wrap, sandwich i get durring the week along with clothing (boardshorts, marley shirts) and a few other things. it works out beautifully all in all. but yeah i just thought of that, cause its been workin out rly well, but then again, im just 1 person who just has 1 person to loook out for and 1 person lookin out for me. so it works out fairly well. but anyway im off cause its gonna be a great sunday beach day and maybe even a diamond head bike ride. im out cya hf gl

Dear Hawaii-Bound Adventurers:
If you can imagine it, you can do it. Youth and enthusiasm will take you a long way. Although it's VERY expensive to survive in Hawaii, you will be able to on your energy. If you can do anything like carpentry, yard care, or whatever, you'll be able to find something. Are you going to the big island? I just visited there yesterday. It's really nice, big, prehistoric and I believe it's a place where you can create your own opportunities. You can do it! ;-D Last edited by busybody; 05-04-2008 at 01:43 PM. Come out here first. Check it out. I think you will do well, since you are young, just be carefull. If you do move here, ditch your car, don't bring it. Depending on how close your job is to you house, a bike is just fine. I grew up on Oahu, but have spent the last 4 years going back and going to Maui. I like Maui the best. It just depends on what you like personally. If you like bigger cities, go for Honolulu, if you like a quiet, but not boring place, Maui is nice. More laid back, I think. It's all about personal prefrence. I think there is more to do on Oahu.

You don't have to wait a full year to get the 2nd rabies shot. Hawaii requires you to wait at least 90 days from the first rabies shot to the second and the vet will allow you to only wait 90 days, as opposed to waiting a full year. If your vet is adamant about waiting more than 90 days for his second shot, find another vet who is not, unless ofcourse there's a unique health risk for your pet. So the wait time is 90 days for the second shot and 90 more days after the second shot before arriving Hawaii(another requirement from the HDOA), which is a grand total of 180 days (plus however long you have to wait for his first shot if it's a very young puppy - vets require that they be at least 3 months of age for their first rabies shot). Again, you do not have to wait 14 months to have both of the 2 shots, it's only 6 months after the first rabies shot and 9 months if you're puppy was born today. It's still a long arse time but on a positive side, it gave us more time to save money for the big move! And don't forget about the blood test like Jessiema said. KSU or DOD has to RECIEVE the blood sample at least 120 days before you're arrival, assuming you passed the test. So what we've done with our new puppy is: He got his first rabies shot. Then got mircrochipped. Then we'll send his blood work after waiting 21 days from the day of the 1st rabies shot (recommendation on the HDOA website) with his microchip number. Then we wait 91 days from the 1st rabies shot for his 2nd rabies shot. Wait another 90 days and arrive in HNL with a big smile and a wagging tail! ![]() Hope that adds clarification and not confusion. ![]() |
