I think I know how they feel. I know I get a bit blue when it hits 75 in the summer!

Between the two of us next winter, there is going to be much rejoicing on the island as we sit on our lanais watching the sunset with our mojitos in hand. Ahhh, I can't wait!

Yes, next winter will be fabulous!! The only thing getting me through these cold, dreary months, is the vision you just described. Even a couple of weeks ago when I was there, it rained every day. It didn't bother me a bit. It was in the 70's - I had my flip flops on showing off my french pedicure, and sat on the lanai of our vacation rental just watching those beautiful double rainbows out over the water. Heaven . . .

Actually Texas is a beautiful, diverse state with much to offer. Texans are, for the most part, very welcoming and warm people. I just moved to Hawaii from Texas, and find the Aloha spirit is much the same as West Texas hospitality. That said, Texans would never want someone who didn't want to be there. As someone from my small town once told an unhappy newcomer, there are three roads leading out of town, do you want to borrow some travelling money lol.

Well, part of the problem is that in Hawaii there is a myth of "the mainland". There is no such thing. Detroit is not San Francisco is not New Hampshire is not Alabama. Every state is very different and every city is very different. Different incomes, different races, different everything. When I lived in San Francisco just taking Bart across the bay to Oakland put me in a totally different world. Even within San Francisco the Mission district was totally different from Chinatown, which was totally different from North Beach, which was right next door to Chinatown. We also moved from Hawaii to Tucson, then to Galveston, Tx, and now we are on to what we consider the best city for us, Las Cruces, N.M. You just have to find your place in the sun.If I didn't like a city or state I would never have stayed there for 5 years. Go off on expeditions to see different places and do your research.

I agree, never leave, Las Vegas is a horrible place to live, I miss my home in the islands, I miss the ocean, I miss the kind community. No one cares about others here.

I've never lived on the islands, and have only been to Kauai once, last week. I've lived in Omaha, Phoenix, and now Denver, and in all three places I have felt like an alien. Granted, I was only on Kauai for a week, but I have never felt so comfortable in a place in my life. I felt like I belonged there. The locals I got to know said the same thing. Several actually mistook me for a local. The one odd thing that people kept saying was that my "eyes are different" than most mainlanders. I guess we all have a place where we belong. I don't know if Kauai is mine, after all, I was only there for a week, but it sure felt like home.

I doubt I will be able to move there. I'm not rich, but I'm not poor either. Everything would have to work out just right. I guess if it is meant to be, they will.

Good luck to all who are moving to the islands, and best wishes to those who long to move back.

Default Drying out in the desert...

Hey, I feel the same way. We've been in the desert for two years and I can't wait to get back to Hawaii! We lived on the Big Island for over 7 years. I never had a bloody nose there from the weather being so dry. LOL I have a short temperature comfort zone. I don't like it too hot or too cold. (Don't ask me why we moved to New Mexico! LOL) Hawaii is the perfect temp for me!

Default Catchment Water

Very informative. Thanks so much for sharing!

Sharlee,
You best keep your high tech filter system! Also buy extra filters and ship them (they might be cheaper in Oregon). I lived in Kea'au for a year and a half on Catchment. I loved having the soft water (no mineral stains in sinks and toilets!) but you have to be very careful of the other things that can grow in the water. Leptospirosis is very dangerous. We didn't drink our catchment water because we didn't have the UV or reverse osmosis system. We triple filtered our water and only cooked with and drank store bought water. Do some searches on the Internet on Leptospirosis.

Congratulations on making the move to the Big Island!
Bonnie

I treated myself to a two week trip to Hawaii for my birthday. When I visited the Hilo area, I knew I had to get moved there as fast as I could. I'm now getting my house in Prescott AZ ready to sell - as soon as it is gone . . . . so am I!
