Hawaii Aloha Spirit or Caucasian (sp) prejudice
I have read many threads on Hawaii. Some read if you are nice and have a kind heart you would fit in just fine if you moved to Hawaii. Some read there is a lot of prejudices against white people and they will tell you to go home. Others have said they love Hawaii it is not fast paced. It is a relaxed atomspere and implied that a lot of mainlanders come and expect to bring the busyness of the mainland with them and that is not well tolerated. Having never been there I do not know what is true. I know there are prejudices no matter where you go but some threads make it seem like the prejudices there are innercity hard core prejudices all over. Can someone give me some insight on where the Aloha Spirit truely lives and where it doesn't?

There are many, many threads on this subject throughout this forum - run a search and you'll come up with a ton of information.
Long story short: Hawaii is like any other place. Be yourself, be nice, be open, and you'll get what you give. There is a spirit of aloha throughout Hawaii.

Thank you for your insight. Have you lived in Hawaii long? My husband is a truck driver? How is the job market there? What is the cheapest area or island to live on? Thanks

it would behoove you to take the advice from msjones post and use the forum's search button at the top of the page. also, what does this post have to do with the original?! it doesn't appear that you have done any research at all?!!!!!

Dear Ginger S My wife and I have just came back from Hawaii and I can tell you the aloha spirit is all around if you look for it. You see it in the eyes of many people there. The only thing that mean spirited people can surmise is that white mainlanders do have a name that you will never be rid of even if you live on the island for many years. This does not translate into a prejudice. Quite the contrary I have found Hawaiians patient with Haoles and as far as my experience have been they work very hard to understand where we come from and our way of dealing with things that is quite different from how they deal with things(I like the Hawaiian way of dealing with things much better!) Granted crime occurs there probably are some angry people there but that is not because they are Hawaiian. Someone told me the spirit and philosophy of Hawaii is "to be" which translates into a respect for who you are and the freedom "to be" who you want to be. thats pretty good in my book

I have done a search which is why I asked the original question. There was so much contradicting information. It seems everybody sees things differently. msjones seems like she was more in tune with the situation there so I thought she might have information on other topics. She didn't seem to mind me asking. Didn't mean to offend anyone. Have a good night

Ginger,
I am not a resident, but I have asked a lot of people similar questions since I too would like to live in Hawaii. Just like many counties, each island has their more affordable areas and their 'I'll never have that amount of money' areas. I have visited 3 times, and will be returning for a 4th time next week, all to Maui. I have looked extensively at housing and there is a wide range of costs, but the 3 bedroom 2 bath style I have been looking for seem to start at about $500,000 and start climbing from there.
Jobs seem to be available when I have looked, and since Hawaii is such a big tourist destination, there will always be jobs that require support of that industry.
Part of my attraction to Hawaii is the Aloha Spirit. Not only are the people of Hawaii true ambassadors of the Aloha Spirit, but the transplanted residents cannot help but have this Spirit rub off on them and they too embody that Spirit. Maybe it's the relaxed lifestyle, maybe it's the sun, sand and surf, or maybe it's the mystique of the islands themselves, but I truly feel more at peace there than anywhere I have ever visited. I love the ocean so I know at some point in my life I will live there. What better place to be, right?
Hope this helps
Aloha
Mark

with so many people visiting this forum: having lived here their entire life; having lived here for awhile; for decades or just on vacation, you are bound to find contradicting information and different opinions. this is the case for any other state or country one would be contemplating on moving to.
i don't believe any member was/is offended, just frustrated. hence, the reason that several members, the moderator, and myself suggested using the search feature. this subject/question as been answered over and over again.
the "aloha spirit" lives and could be compared to "southern hospitality."
