Have you heard anyone within the Hawaiian tourist industry expressing concern that the opening up of Cuba will drain tourist dollars thataway?

No. And I doubt they concern themselves much with Bermuda, Bahamas, Caribbean, Cancun, and Cabo that actually have 5 star resorts considering record tourism with hotels mostly at capacity and not much being built.

Cuba will not draw US family, honey moon and wedding tourism as Hawaii does; at least not right away. The lack of entertainment infrastructure and the Spanish language will make parents with kids hesitate. You can see that with the Canadians visiting Cuba, as they were never blocked to go.

It will certainly affect Bahamas, Jamaica, Belize and Cayman Islands, and the English language is the only thing what will keep those in business with US tourism. Everything else Cuba will have more of: Nature, friendliness, fishing, diving, hiking, less crime, history, very low prices, endless colonial architecture, no attitude, better music, beautiful & friendly slim people. And in no time will they have the casinos as well.

Question is why would tourists still go to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Yucatan or Cabo when Spanish is no problem? Cuba has already finely built European resorts. When these tourists encounter magnificent Cuba right at their doorstep they will be hooked.

Hawaii tourism will be only slightly affected and that is in the distant future, and only in regards of Eastern seaboard population.

I recently attended a speech by one of the main Hawaii tourism gurus. Cuba wasn't on the chart at the time but they showed us on the power point that showed how most of the Caribbean and other "island" destinations had incorporated the destination Hawaii tourism fonts, artwork, and posters just barely changed enough to avoid copyright issues. Basically they just wait for the Hawaii ad campaign to start and saturate the market with the dollars, then they copy it and try to sway tourists to their destination instead.

Hawaii authorities have no problem selling Central American coffee under the 'Kona', foreign teas and Australian macadamia nuts under the 'Hawaiian' name. Sadly it goes both ways, right?

Well Puerto Rico (and the USVI), like Hawaii, has the advantage of being part of the United States. Unfortunately, they have not managed to capitalize on this all that well.

The two places couldn't be more different.

I could see it effecting other nearby countries in the Caribbean....but Hawaii?

The kind of person attracted to going to Cuba, just isn't the same kind of person who is attracted to going to Hawaii.
