Well not to sure if this answer still needs to be answered but for me it depends on who you ask when asking this question the people who learn from books will put in the okina. I ask myself what would my kupunas would say to this question whos first language is hawaiian who grew up with parents and grandparents who could not speak anything else but hawaiian an i would have to say that they would not put the okina so for that i would have to agree with Makahas own. This is no disrespect to the people who wrote the books but respect to my own bloodline.

you know what? i think you're onto something here. the language was spoken/pronounced differently from island to island. and, princess abigail kawananakoa said recently that today's language is different than from the past. one, thing though, kupunas is not correct. |

I have a question about the proper spelling of the Hawai‘ian Islands... Until recently, I always thought the name included the ‘okina, however I've heard from someone recently that said that they have heard that it does not.
Can somebody help? Thanks. |
