So the word "cheap" in Hawaiian is a hilarious one. On mainland I could fly anywhere in states for few hundred dollars. I've been here two years, and was wondering if any of you have taken any "cheap" vacations FROM the islands, approximately how much did it cost, and what time of year was it? By "cheap" I mean less than $1000 round trip airfare per person.

We can fly to virtually any state for under $1,000 RT. Deals like $400 RT to the west coast aren't that hard to find.

You can fly this summer to generally any US West City with advance purchase for well under $1,000 roundtrip. You can even fly to Japan, for instance - Osaka - in mid-July for about $650 roundtrip. NYC in mid-July is under $1,000 roundtrip.
$1,000 isn't exactly a tough number to hit.
Cheapest flights tend to be in October by the Hawaii to/from Hawaii.
$1000 will get you to a lot of destinations. West coast / Asia the majority of the year, and farther off season and when you catch sales.

Can fly HNL to several cities in Australia for way under $1000 on jetstar in our summer. It's their winter, so tourism is a bit down. Go to skyscanner.com and search from honolulu to "everywhere" for a particular set of dates, or whole month at a time. It'll show you a list of countries, sorted by price.
There are literally thousands of places to visit for airfare less than $1000. I really don't understand why there is a question.

Many of us vacation on one of the other islands. RT airfare usually around $160. Its the rental car and hotel rates that get you. At least many of the hotels have Kama'aina rates. Looks out for those mandatory 'resort fees' that charge you for crap you never use.
