Some threads have popped up regarding moving with KIDS to Hawaii (although to be fair, they pop up a lot more in winter) - seriously folks, wait until the kids get out of the house and into college.

Some recent stories....

Hawaii Public Schools Are Turning Out 'Bone Ignorant' Students - Civil Beat News

"He went on to say that he had a 24-year-old student who thought Brazil and Chile were in Central America and couldn’t locate a single European country. When he asked her to locate New Zealand, she pointed to Iceland. Auwe!"

"But you should know, most of our students are not stupid at all, just bone ignorant – especially those who come to us from the Hawaii public school system."

"Nowadays (in contrast to, say, any time before 1980) a majority of incoming UHM students are generally unprepared for university level work – particularly unprepared in three areas (beyond critical thinking, which is a major sore spot in U.S. society in general):

• history (what happened before last week and anywhere outside of Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S., except in the world of celebrity entertainment and/or sports)

• geography (where anyplace is, outside of Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S. — and even then)

• and the ability to read, write, or construct a sequential paragraph in the English language."

Student Proficiency Dips on New Test - Civil Beat News

"Less than half of Hawaii students tested were deemed proficient in English and math on the new state tests."

This is sad, and you know it's not the fault of the kids/students.

No, not the kids fault. But if you were only going to pay teachers about $50,000 a year you get what you pay for.

21% of students on Oahu attend private school. This is more than double the national average (10%). So a much higher percentage of high-age earners send their kids to private school. A lower percentage of children from wealthier families attending our public schools translates to lower test scores.

We also have a high percentage of families with limited English proficiency (13% vs national average of 8%) due to our higher than average rate of immigration. That does not help the situation.

I'm sure better pay for our teachers would help a little but at the end of the day the onus is on the parents. And unfortunately here in Hawaii, we have a disproportionately high percentage of parents that don't value education.

I'm a byproduct of the public school system here. But if I ever have children, I'll definitely want them to attend private school at least from intermediate/middle school on.

Certainly some of those 79% can afford it or at least can stop procreating all the time like rabbits

another factor in all public schools across all states, they teach to the average. the gifted and the kids who need more help to learn are left to their own devices for the most part. this is where parents have to pick up the slack. gifted or not some parents don't bother and figure it's the schools job.

The average in Hawaii is lower than on the mainland. This whole state is basically at the level of the worst inner city schools on the mainland
