Glad to have moved to the Mainland...?
Here's a twist on the other threads that emphasize the negative side of a decision to move to the Mainland. Are there any people out there who LOVE Hawaii, but a made a choice to move and are glad they did. I'm interested in hearing from people who who born and and raised in Hawaii and have moved, and also, those who lived in Hawaii for a period of time and moved back. Why was it a good move for you?

Well, I guess my husband and I would somewhat fall into that catagory. He lived in hawaii for about 7 or 8 years altogether, me about 4. We met in hawaii, had our first son there...loved it..blah blah blah. For us, the reasons to move to the mainland and stay were basically because of job opportunity and family. If you have a lot of family on the mainland you dont really get to see them much in Hawaii with airfares being so expensive. And it is hard to find a good job in hawaii to support a family..also when your kids get older it is hard for them to find jobs and stay near the family also. If the economy was better and flying cheaper...I would seriously consider moving back. But I also like it here in san diego where jobs are better and family is closer. Also in california, in certain areas, their are a lot of polynesian expats. lol.

After I posted this, I wondered if anyone would post anything...I mean if you are happy somewhere else, why would you be checking Hawaii's forum? Anyway, mahalo to the two of you for replying. It's always interesting to hear other points of view.

I won't be staying here my whole life, probably only a few years (3 tops, if that). I moved here right out of college for work, and it has been such an amazing experience. I truly love all the people I have met in this short time and I have been taken in as the crazy haole girl that I am. As much as I love it here, I know I don't truly belong here. My family is on the east coast and I miss them (and sometimes the cold weather!). I would not have done anything differently, thus far, but I do look forward to being on the mainland in the future!

I understand completely. I have been here seventeen years and am now planning for a move to the mainland for a variety of reasons. It's all been so wonderful here, and we certainly aren't moving because we want to leave Hawaii. There are tradeoffs for sure though, and being over here sometimes feels like being in a completely different world, almost like living in a bubble or in a beautiful castle surrounded by the biggest moat ever. It's just hard to get up and go somewhere else whenever you want!
I know I will certainly miss so many things about Hawaii, but that adventurous spirit that brought me here is the same reason I seek to leave and see something new too.

I was born and raised on the Leeward side of Oahu. My parents insisted that I move to the mainland to go to school. They must have known that moving to the mainland would be a better opportunity. Parents knows best. There is no way I would be able to live the quality of life that I have here on the mainland. I truley miss Hawaii, but with a great job, I'm able to take many trips back home to get my local fix
