Sounds like self-importance, snobbery, and close-mindedness is not accepted in Hawaii.

I would venture to say that as long as you show a little humility, you will be ok.

Default moving to hawaii

If your thinking about moving to Hawaii have no fear cause hawaii is the melting pot of the world, and we locals are made up of so many different ethnicities but we all have the spirit of aloha for the most part!

I did not take the time to read more than the first and the last page of this thread. I was stationed there in the mid sixties, and yes, I did come across a lot of racial problems from the locals then. We were warned to be careful and to always go as a group. I did not have blonde hair or blue eyes, but we had our problems and base command made sure we were always aware.

I am going back in about thirty days to spend several weeks and see what changes have been made with the idea of maybe moving there.

TGPilot, at the time you were stationed in Hawaii, there was still a big residue of resentment towards Hawaii becoming a state. I'm not sure if it was all that popular of a move. Even today, folks don't really celebrate statehood day with much enthusiasm. If you were stationed here in the mid-sixties, then official statehood would have been less than a decade old and folks would have still been working out their feelings towards it. Which would be one of the reasons for military folks to go in groups. Military is seen as it's own type of group, though, not just as "haole". Generally military folks are guaranteed to leave in a couple of years so folks don't really befriend them very deeply.

Today's Oahu won't be very recognizable anymore if you are comparing it to the Oahu of the 60's. Hilo won't be as much of a shock, though.

Living on the Big Island on the Kona side with a husband that has blonde hair and blue eyes was never an issue and no one ever batted an eye. He was accepted quite well and made many local friends, both with the more hi-tech crowd we worked with on Mauna Kea and the more local crowd he worked with as a mechanic in Kona. It's mostly about the attitude you go there with. There are icky people everywhere, you can't account or change that, but going into it with an open heart and no reservations will do everything you can do to have a great experience there.
