Moving to Puna or Hilo? Ya might want to think again...
I just spent two month in Puna and a lot of time in Hilo thinking I would move to Hawaii. All I can do is warn others now who are being sold the whole "paradise" idea.
The Big Island, and Puna specifically, is only a visual paradise. In all other areas it is a living hell.
Why?
The drugs here are a big problem, which includes alcohol, pot, and meth. It ruins the place because you are always dealing with people who do not think straight or who are just jonesing for the next high. I cannot tell you how many people I see hitchhiking carrying a case of Busch Lite. But it really bugs me when I see young kids, like 12 years old getting high at Kehena Beach with no adult caring or giving them guidance in the decision.
The mentally ill and the lack of care for them on this side of the island, which leaves them homeless and taken advantage of.
The deluded young hippies. Jeez if I see one more white kids with dreadlocks I am going to slit my wrists. When will they understand that they are no different the a woman who wears Prada. And put down that didjeridu, you are not aboriginal! AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO COME TO HAWAII TO FIND YOURSELF!
The economy. 11% inflation in two years? No thanks. And the tourist industry seems to be tanking as well. For more on the economy in Hawaii read:
Hawaii Economic News
High DWI's, up 9% last year on the Big Island.
The lack of care to buildings and roads. Hilo and ahoa are run down and dirty.
No Aloha. Or if it is there they are only doing it to get something from you. Really, I am Buddhist, I treat people nicely, unconditionally, but I have met more friendly people in Manhattan then anywhere on the Big Island.
The parks are a desolate mess.
The Vog. Personally, it makes me feel like crap. Headache, stuffed up.
Staph infections are a huge problem here, including the MRSA strain.
Hawaii Leads Nation in Deadly Staph Infections
The mosquitoes.
But I think it is that many come out here thinking it is paradise (and we all know if you want to ruin a place just call it "paradise") then they find it sucks and they transfer that negative energy to you.
And I think the volcano is about to let forth, but that is just my opinion.
So, think hard about living here. Pele will kick yer butt in a minute.

Well, lets see, you go to say, Texas, don't they have a slight drug problem there as well? Rattlesnakes, tarantulas, black widows, scorpions, perhaps a mosquito or two, the occaisional tornado, sometimes some flooding. Weren't two guys recently executed for dragging a Black man behind their pickup truck until he was dead???? Weren't those two guys white???????? Oh yea, Hawaii really sucks big time, I'm heading for Texas!!!!!!!

Just a reminder...
Be civil, no personal attacks, flaming, or insults. We may attack ideas (politely) but we do not attack the speaker of the idea. Be careful with your words, there is a point where being direct crosses a line into blunt, in-your-face hostility. Please, report bad posts instead of engaging in flame wars on the boards.
If you disagree with something, say so, but explain WHY.

I was not comparing Puna to any other place, just pointing out the negatives that I feel were over looked and breaking the myth of "paradise" which has suckered many people into vacations and land purchases.
But I would rather live in Austin. Better health care, transportation, and music. I mean, you should try to spend a night in the Hilo airport with that music blasting in your ears.

Your Facts

what you stated was your view, which are your facts. some of us just have a completely different view of Hilo and the people and more than likely it's because we visit different places. the parks that we go to and take our grandson to are beautiful. there are a few beaches and parks we would not go to but again there are parts of every town that you learn to stay away from.
every place on earth has good and bad points, it's a matter of which you choose to see that create your reality. i have lived from new york to puerto rico to alaska to hawaii and points in between and i would not trade hawaii for any of the other places.

Over the last year and a half I've spent about 6 weeks in Hilo. Didn't see any white kids with dreadlocks and the closest I came to someone itching for their next high was at the coffee shop in Pahoa where a couple of guys looked like they had too much coffee.
I'm a Buddhist too, as were my parents and grandparents , my uncles and aunties and my cousins. I really like Hilo and Puna and Kau and the Hamakua coast.
It's a good thing you went to visit. Sounds like Hawaii is not your kind of place. Don't move there.

So much talent
Aloha,
Thanks for the info on Plumeria. Hadn't read anything on the white fly problem. Good to know. I'm an avid gardener and plan on securing a terrific collection of them.
when I was on Maui, I was fortunate to have had Phil Parvin as my next door neighbor & friend. Know who he is? When I left Maui, he presented me with a cutting of each of the hybrids he had developed over the years.
I think about a dozen or so. Don't know what happened to them at this point. Needless to say I'll be starting over.
I think my biggest excitement is attending the Lei festivals. Boy, that's where the talent is. I've never seen such beautiful works of art in my life. Gonna be my niche'. Gonna learn that art inside and out! But, it's like comparing a single rose to a dozen of them. What's more beautiful, a single Plumeria lei or a more elaborate creation? There is no comparison, they are both breathtaking, don't you agree? I am in such awe of the floral work in the Islands. So beautiful. So good for the soul and spirit.
Much aloha to all.
