There is so much talk on forums like this about VRBO and Airbnb that most people don't realize that 30 years ago there was no choice other than a hotel.

We built our Vacation Rental in 1989. No VRBO. No Airbnb. No Expedia. No Internet!

They came along soon, and we utilized them Big Time. Joined VRBO in 1996. Before that, it was advertise in newspapers, or Sunset Magazine, or Golf Digest. At about $500 a month! Twelve times VRBO.

HomeAway bought out VRBO some years later, and started trying to change the public's mindset about hotels vs. VRs. Home Away from Home was the idea, and they have really worked at it, pulling in over a million listings. From all the hype, you would think that they have changed that mindset, but I have seen statistics that say that the vast majority of travelers still stay in hotels.

I wouldn't, but that's just me. As they say: "Different Strokes".

There is nothing better or worse for one type of vacation versus another. Every has different tastes and different goals of what they want from their vacation.

We prefer VRBO rentals rather than hotels or resorts. We used to stay at hotels all the time, but to us it's tiring to stay at a hotel and eating at restaurants all the time. I know plenty of people who prefer expensive hotels and resorts. Those are the type of people who are too lazy to cook and prefer to go to restaurants for every single meal. They are typically the same people who never bring their lunch to work and eat at restaurants every work day, even though it cost them at least a few hundred dollars a month more than bringing your lunch. I'd rather save and invest the money. The saved money from avoiding restaurants adds to your wealth and is one of the ways you can reach financial freedom, where work is an option, not a requirement. Some people never want to stop working and retire. That's Ok for others to feel that way, but to me that's like being a slave to working your whole life.

There's plenty of people who don't care about spending a lot of money when they are on vacation. Booking a hotel or resort is easier than a vacation rental property. The results are usually more consistent too. But then you might feel trapped in the tiny hotel room and have to put up with the crowds. Although some people don't mind hunkering down in a tiny hotel room or putting up with crowds. What's important is what is right for you.

I think I'll stick with Grand Wailea for Staycations. I noticed yesterday that when South side gets windy,it hits the Andaz harder. Plus, Grand Wailea Beach Towels are bigger and thicker.

We stay at condos or homes in Hawaii. Don't like hotels at all, not comfortable to spend evenings in. We don't drink and go out at night but like to make dinner and watch a movie in after spending the day at a different beach driving around the island.

'Please kindly carry my luggage.' 'Do please, wait on me!' 'Yes, please kindly bring me another mojito before bathing in the ocean.' Yikes, the long suffering Mrs. Rain Monkey and myself enjoy taking 'staycations'. We certainly don't do it often, but the service and amenities we have to put up with by forcing ourselves to endure several nights at the Halekulani or Royal Hawaiian are well worth the incredible aggravation of commuting (we have to listen to our kid(s) while they drive us to our chosen destination) the three or four miles to get there. Renting a few nights at someone's home? No thank you. I
might as well stay in my own. I know where the liquor cabinet is located and its contents are reasonably priced.
