"Whether you can make it on the islands more or less depends on your will and determination and planning."

True That!

The first thing you should have locked down is housing and a job before you land.

Also, never tap your 401k prior to 59.5 years of age. It is a stupid financial mistake.

If you cannot afford to visit, or have to tap retirement accounts before you are actually retired, you should go somewhere else or stay put.

Foodland will eat up all your money faster than you can eat their food.

Well, weeding out the folks who are likely to move here and then crash and burn saves us from putting out fires.

I'm in Arkansas. I can't find any polluted air. The scenery is beautiful here too. It is hot and humid in the summer and cold and humid in the winter. I visited several timesa few years back and couldn't lock down any work. It might be easier for my family now that wife is a nurse with a few years but that would put too much strain on her so maybe one day. Then some days I realize I can buy a 2000 acre ranch here for the price of a 900 sq ft house on Kauai where I wanted to live. Maybe I'll buy a condo and just come a few times a year. I don't think Kim jong il can reach me here either so there's that. One thing I noticed is the pay for most jobs is same as here but the housing is just not attainable on those salaries. Still love it out there.

Visiting is the nicest way to be in Hawaii. Then you get to be in all the fancy hotels and hang out at the beach and eat out all the time. You get to drive a new bar code car, too. It's nice to be a tourist!
