I'm going to Kapi'olani community college at Diamond Head this august but I've never been to hawaii...
so i'm just wondering if the area in diamond head is metro or suburban?
(I know that it's near downtown & waikiki & a touristy area)
(in addition, i love to ride bikes!)
thanks (^;^)

It's kind of suburban. Single family houses. Pretty small lots. Narrow streets. The areas around KCC are Kaimuki and Kapahulu. I find that a pretty good way to get a feel of an area is to go to Google Images
Google Image Search
and put in the name of the area.

The truth about Lava flow on Big Island
Hi Hawaii Savant:
I visited the Big Island yesterday, and a lady told me that people are not getting the real scoop on the magnitude of encroachment that is going on with the current volcanic activity.
She thinks there are more severe threats that the available information suggests, e.g. lava flowing outside its designated zones, et al..
Do you have an inside scoop on lava zones (real and current) and how threatened various areas could be?
I love Fern Forest area and wondered if that has any impending lava threat in the reasonable future (like within 20 years) ?

Hi Busybody,
This link is to the most recent map showing the extent of the lava flow:
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/maps.html
The past extent of the flow into the forest reserve can be seen, but there is no recent (as in the last few weeks) flow in that area, as I can see. The only area in red (click for the larger map) that is a recent expansion of flow is around the Royal Gardens subdivision as the lava flows toward the ocean.
There are a lot of "theories" about what the volcano may do, but no one can really predict the future activity. Each person must individually weigh the data and the risk and decide what area is best for him/her.
With aloha,
Cynthia

You take your chances anywhere you live. At any time any where on the island could get covered with lava right now its not headed toward fern forest its going into the ocean.
