At this point, if the OP is still trying to decide between Oahu & Big Island, I think Oahu would be the better choice. There's zero housing available at the moment. With about 2K folks being relocated out of Lower Puna, well, rentals are few and far between. What with the lack of tourists, folks' job hours are being cut back, too.

Actually, if I were a hotel, I'd rent out rooms to lava evacuees at whatever it costs to provide a room. That would keep the hotel staff working and the rooms full. The hotel would get a lot of good publicity, but they'd better not mention they're letting the rooms out at cost, some sort of special 'lava rate' would be a better term for it.

I have decided to move to the big island. Being from NY, I did not want to deal with crowds. Thanks to you all.

Is quite simple. If you like urban place then it is Oahu, if you like nature, peace, and quiet then it is Big Island...
