I've emailed my resume to the recruiter in Hawaii and received an email to download the official application. Did you interview in Illinois or in Hawaii? It sounds like finding a job in Special Education there will be relatively easy, but I do wonder why there is a shortage. I'm also concerned about not being able to pick where I will be teaching. I don't want someone to dictate where I live.

Beth, toss aside all your experience finding and getting jobs for a moment. Hawaii has it's own rules and processes that have N O T H I N G to do with how things go in other places. People often get frustrated because of this. I say apply and see where it takes you. If you need to live in one particular place, loosen your grip on your desired employment outcome. MOST people who live here do not do the type of work they thought they would. Also, commuting from Hilo to Kona takes 2 to 2 1/2 hours 1 way and I drive too fast.

I bet you can bring something here and give your experience to kids who desparately need it. Best of luck to you, wherever you land.

Thank you! Kalona
Aloha Kalona, the cheapest weekly rate I found was about $277 from Enterprise. You might try Lloyd's Auto. Hilo,"reasonable rates on time tested (used) vehicles" 808-935-1509

Aloha Leilaniguy,

I'll give Lloyd's a call and see how they compare. With the cost of a rental car for 3-4 weeks, I could almost buy a car for a month and then sell it... almost.

Question Crime in varies parts of Puna

Aloha I will be moving back home to Hawaii in a couple of months. I've heard through the coconut wireless that Puna has a "huge" crime problem due to Ice and crystal meth. Are there any parts of Puna that are safer than others? I understand that HPP has a low crime/breakin rate, are there any others?

Crime has increased exponentially due to Ice. HPP has lower breakins but one thing people don't realise is that a bunch of sex offenders live in HPP, Ainaloa, Orchidland and Hawaiian Acres. Lots and lots of hard criminals are paroled to Puna. Down by the ocean in HPP is really nice now. I live in Kurtistown and it's pretty peaceful here. Ice has changed the landscape. I had a theft problem one time: I lost a lawn mower, weed wacker, tank of gas and misc tools. They were stolen from my carport. When I go to the gas station in Mountain View, about 1/2 of the people I see there are on ice. In J Hara it's not quite as bad, a lot of them are just drunks. The best place I can recommend is Hawaiian Shores Recreational Estates. It's a tight community and the closer you get to the ocean, the nicer it gets. The Beaches side is ratty until you get to the ocean. Leilani is pretty nice now but it's Lava Zone 1, Geothermal Subzone if that makes a difference to you. Mauna Loa Estates and Volcano Village are also lovely. Kapoho Beach Lots is gorgeous. Again, lava zone 1. There are many "avoid at all costs" subdivisions in Puna.

Best of luck to you. I'm outta here at the end of the month, I've had enough and I'm going to the mainland.

Sorcerer68, you say, and I quote: "a bunch of sex offenders live in HPP, Ainaloa, Orchidland and Hawaiian Acres". Where did you hear this? I've lived here almost 8 years and never heard that one before.

Hello 4everislandgirl,

Before you rule it out, go to this website. www.familywatchdog.us (www dot familywatchdog dot us) It lists where offenders live, and says what type of offense they have committed. I just looked up my neighborhood and discovered there is a rape offender a few miles from me ... and now I know his name, what he looks like and where he lives. It is good to be informed. Check it out before you give up your plans.

Best wishes,

~Kalona

According to the FamilyWatchdog site there are 2 offenders in HPP, 3 in Orchidlands Estates, none in Ainaloa, 1 in Hawaiian Acres, and 2 near Keaau. Their names, addresses, photos and convictions are also listed. There are convicted offenders living in most neighborhoods in every state, we just don't usually know about it. Knowing who they are, where they are, what they look like and what they have been convicted of helps to keep our neighborhoods safer. There is no need to guess... just look it up. You can look up an entire neighborhood by zip code if you don't have a street address and you can find any zip code by doing a google search for a town with a state.

I hope this information is helpful.
