Have to agree with SouperStar. Things that are abused usually also have proper uses. Marijuana is made from the dried leaves and flowering tops of the hemp plant, which provides useful fibers for making rope and cloth. God did create this useful plant, but many have chosen to use it in an improper way, damaging the body that God gave them.

Maybe you didn't write this top ten list, but you certainly posted it! What was your purpose? As far as I'm concerned, you're trolling. I would never post a Top Ten worst things about living in Grand Rapids (or Chicago) if I'm not from there. This is my take on your list:
1.) We don't seem to mind coexisting with disgusting creatures such as cockroaches
2.) We live in dumps!
3.) We drive slow and need to be more aggressive and use our horns
4.) Us locals are a bunch of ice heads
5.) Your sister is not comfortable with people who are Asian, Polynesian, Micronesian and etc.
6.) no comment
7.) we just don't know how to drive, do we!
8.) doesn't Chicago have a lot of residents where English is not their first language...your comments are not unique to Hawaii. Didn't we call from a different place at one time
9.) yup we have a relaxed atmosphere...nothing wrong with that. It sure beats living in Chicago. When I read the chicago tribune online, I read about all of children 18 and younger being shot and stabbed on a weekly basis.
10.) we have to fly too
I really wish the mods would zap this thread. You might as well call me a:
- an uneducated, racist, lazy pineapple head
- who's addicted to ice (crystal meth)
- and doesn't know to drive
- and lives in a dump and sleeps with cockroaches

Hey, Target is coming to Hawaii... I want to say it's October '09 but I'm not positive. They're opening one in Alaska this October and Hawaii is next. And I think Oahu as well as the Big Island are getting one.

You are taking it WAY to serious... so much for being relaxed.
My sister's viewpoint is good insight to others not from the islands.
I AM SORRY YOU MISSED THE LIST OF "10 BEST THINGS ABOUT LIVING IN HAWAII" ...People tend to focus on the negative.
Please make a list about Grand Rapids... I would LOVE to see it ; )
Take care.

I enjoyed both lists (10 best and 10 worst). Nothing I hadn't read before, but always nice to see someone else's opinion, particularly someone who is new to the islands. Seems most people on here have either lived there a long time, haven't ever lived there, or lived there a little while and left.
I am surprised that there is so much outrage over things that have been mentioned many times before as "negatives" of Hawaii life: traffic, drugs, bugs, etc.
On the one hand people are always "warning" mainlanders to stay away, it's "SO expensive", "most people who come here leave in a couple of years", etc., but at the same time, getting so defensive when others point out some of the more serious drawbacks to island life. Come on, who doesn't occasionally get a LITTLE frustrated at the "slow pace" of things? It's great when it means that you get to knock off work at 4 and go surfing, but when YOU are trying to get something done, it can be frustrating.
Every place has its ups and downs, and this forum is supposed to be where we discuss them, right?

Dear kaimuki,
Thanks so much for your thoughts, words, but more importantly your actions when describing your life in Hawaii. My husband's been offered a job there and I've been reading these posts for two weeks. Finally, had to stop because of all the negativity impacting my thought process. When I read your post, I know that if we do decide to move, we'll successfully create our own place with friends in peace. Thank you.

So we are moving to Oahu in a month or less... here were MY first thoughts.
1) Cockroaches... I grew up in Fl. Enough said.
2) Small yard? We're getting a condo so this one doesn't really apply to me.
3)Have you ever driven in Boston? How about Jacksonville, FL? THAT'S bad traffic.
4) I heard this is a problem on the island. How is it a problem for me though?
5) Racism... I guess as long as you're not the one being racist, then you're fine. You're a part of the solution to this problem.
6)Ummm... okay that might be weird, but it's hardly deserves to be on a "worst" of anything list.
7) Not too worried about it, we are living and working on the west side.
8) If i can understand the southern "language" I think pidgin will be a snap. haha.
9) There's only 24 hours in a day. Plan accordingly.
10)I didn't leave FL for quite some time, and it didn't really bother me.
My 2 cents. unrealistic? I don't think so.
i gotta say though... i'm so worried about the centipedes!
AHHH!
i'm very excited to be moving there. everyone take care!

Meth basically fuels crime. People steal identities and other objects to get money for their addiction. Copper wire seems to be popular (from phone lines and such). (Some) have started taking catalytic converters off of cars, and stripping the small amount of platinum it contains, to sell it for $ for their addiction. So, it really can affect you.

I lived in Boston a long time, and I'm in LA now. So, yeah, I know traffic. But I hear tales of an hour to go 8 miles, say Ewa Beach to downtown. Every day. And you've got the "one-road in or out" phenomenon... no alternate routes when there's an accident. I've never had that either place, at least not on a regular basis. But with my "thinking positive" hat:
- It seems avoidable, mostly, if you choose carefully where you live and if you have a flexible work schedule.
- It seems to be mostly a rush-hour phenomenon, whereas traffic in LA is just sort of a constant. It took me 2 hours to drive about 40 miles on a Saturday afternoon. On the freeway. And I wasn't even going anyplace *good* like the beach!
- It seems a more laid-back lifestyle, so if you're late because of traffic, maybe it's not a big deal.
- In LA and Boston, everyone lives really far apart. You have to drive a long way (often in bad traffic) to get to see your friends, to get to the beach, to get anywhere that's not home. But on a smaller island, maybe things are closer. I'm hoping that my friends don't all live 30 miles in different directions. (I'm guessing this would be nearly impossible!)
Am I just crazy and hopeful?
