my boyfriend is in the navy
I'm going to be moving to Hawaii in september to join my boyfriend who is stationed there. Help!!! I'm from Georgia so I'm not used to anything remotely close to Hawaii.. I was wondering if there was any advice for someone like me? and also if its true that the locals hate people in or affiliated with the Navy???

Hi ravishing,
You might be surprised at the similiarites you find between the South and Hawaii...I moved here from the Carolinas and loved it here right away.
My advice to all military families is...get off base as much as possible! Or, maybe in your case, it would mean being sure to make friends that are from here, or who have moved here and are making the islands home. I knew a few military families (usually the wives) when I lived on Oahu who felt isolated and "homesick", but then I learned that the only people they were spending time with were other military wives and they hadn't bothered to venture out to try new foods, go on hikes, see some of the less tourist-y places...and I felt very sorry for them. Some of them were letting their time here pass by with not much more than an experience of the base life to show for it.
If you like adventure, you will probably find much to enjoy! Get out and explore and make it a point to meet lots of different kinds of people around the island!
Cynthia
PS--like your screen name! I'm a red-head too...and my SO, who is a drummer/recording engineer, uses the name Ravi Shing when he plays with a band and they want to credit him on their CDs.

Hey ravishing,
I'm on the same boat as well. (no pun intended) I'm moving to Hawaii (hopefully in August) to go to school but my current boyfriend is in the navy and will be stationed there at the end of the month. . . I'm incredibly nervous, excited, anxious- every emotion I can think of! I'm living in NYC right now but I'm originally from FL. My advice is just to read as many forums that you can, google things, and just read EVERYTHING! Good luck! I hope everything turns out the way you hope!

For most people, moving to Hawaii is a culture shock. It was a culture shock for us moving from Hawaii to the mainland. NYC to Hawaii, wow! The military ppl do well, so don't be nervous too much. Give yourselves time to adapt.

Haha, I'm number 3. I am 22, boyfriend in the Navy and school in Honolulu. I will be moving in Dec and have no idea about what I am getting myself into. Finding work and living arrangements are my two greatest fears. I am from Louisiana, but have been residing in Texas for about 3 years now. Spending time there was more of a relief than shock. Please, any advice would help greatly.

My best advice is to visit for if only a couple of days. I did so and it was amazing!!! The culture "shock" really wasnt there for me. It was a lot like being at home just more beach... I recommend North Shore if you wanna have some serious fun. I also had a lot of trouble clearing things with the family but I told them months in advance and they are coming around to the idea. Me and Troy (my boyfriend) are now engaged and thats making things a lot easier. About a month before moving Im going to start looking for employment and Troy is going to make sure that we have a place to live in before i get there.. lol.. It really helps when the other half helps out a lot.
Hope to hear from or see you guys sometime!!!

Where is you boyfriend going to be stationed? I lived in Kailua and on the Marine base in Kaneohe for a few years.

Where would be a good area to start looking for rentals? My boyfriend is in Pearl Harbor and my school is Downtown.
