Hey Tarla,
I've found that the East side of the island has a lower cost of living. I've specifically noticed the rentals and homes for sale are considerably less on the Hilo side than on the Kona side. I hope this helps! |

everythings expensive. I was looking at rentals in kona and they were like $4000 a month for 3 bed 2 bath. and food is more expensive in kona then hilo but the beaches are nicer in kona then in hilo. Kona is more expensive becuase there are more tourist there.

I have now looked at renting a room, until I can get my own place. I had a few options and found out they were scams on that Craig's listing for rentals. It really surprises me on how low and how far people would go to make a quick dollar. I had 3 people who made up ads asking me to transfer the money to them for my deposit and that I needed to give them all my credit card details and stuff. (I'M NOT STUPID) Did a bit of research and come to find they were all SCAMS. Very disappointing! But those stupid people are not going to make me give up my move and I am still coming over, only this time I am way more aware and will be phoning whomever I rent off to make sure it is legit.

Tarla,
Why in the world are you leaving New Zealand? New Zealand is soooooooo much better than Hawaii. |

hey there, well I have lived in New Zealand all my life with having the odd trip either for work or holiday overseas. I am just sick of the way of life in New Zealand. I am venturing out and would like to see how life is in Hawaii and experience it for myself instead of hearing it from everyone else. New Zealand is not all that and it gets a bit boring after having the same routine for the last 28 years of my life. And working routine for the last 9 years at the same place. It's also hit winter over here and it is way cold from all the other winters we have had or that I can remember. Hawaii was a out of the blue decision and I am sticking with it and hope I have a good experience over there. Never know if I don't like it than I suppose it was never meant to be and it's back home to good old New Zealand for me.

Tarla,
It's so funny because I lived in Hawaii, and I thought it was not all it's cracked up to be!! I've been to New Zealand twice, and loved it so much that I wanted to move there. We got caught up in the process, and it took so long, that we gave up trying. So needless to say, we are still in the States, and might try again in 2 years or so. You're right, though, you never know until you try for yourself. If there are good reasons for us not to move to NZ, please let me know, and we will not waste our time. It would be a huge decision and I wouldn't want to waste our time and money, etc, etc. We kept telling ourselves, that we should try and if it didn't work out, we could always move back. ![]() |

Hey! Im Daryl. I am supposed to be writing a paper on mass transit, but I guess I am a very talented procrastinator! Im graduating from college in Boston in two weeks, and want to get out of the continental US for a bit, so I will be landing myself in Kailua- Kona as well! I was first planning on heading out immediately after I graduate in May, but simply cannot resist an Eric Clapton show on june 5th and a robert plant show on the 11th! anyway, I've been reading over a bunch of the posts to learn a bit more about the island and culture. anyway, take care and talk to you all soon!

I think you might like it, as it is very laid back and NZ is a friendly place. Not much drama happens here, and we get our fair share of crime, but not as the states do. Like every country you got to be wary and in the case of moving to NZ, well the Goverment sucks, living in Auckland is expensive, Wellington is cheap to buy houses, NIGHT CLUBS are free entry..lol, getting a job in computers or office or factory work is simple, food is very cheap and so is petrol at the moment. Cars are cheap to buy, well depending where you go. For someone moving over to NZ and coming from America, I think you will love the peaceful lifestyle, however for me I have lived it too long and want to venture out and expand my branches as my aunt puts it. LOL. |
