please help...moving to hawaii
my wife(we are both in our 20's) and our 2 kids (both age 4) we are hopping on a plane and leaving this hole called Montana. we havent saved too much money, but do have enough to get to the island. we will be selling most of our stuff just to get there. we are not moving to HI for profit, but peace of mind. we are trying to find some place to live & jobs (craigslist & other advertisers) and are getting some good ideas...but need some more. thanks

Do you have a job lined up? A place to live? Without these basics, I wouldn't dream of taking two small children into the unknown.

i would double check on that Craig's listing, I like you am doing the big move and applied for places on Craig's listing only to find that 3 places I had applied for were scams. Double check it before you up and go.

My friend sought out the same things, but is now leaving since the job market was a bit tough for her. However, as a previous poster noted, since you do have children, it is vitally important that you secure solid leads, in writing, before embarking out to the islands. It may even be wise to go ahead of the family for a few weeks just to get a feel for any job offers and resident locations you plan to rent/buy. Then, when you know all is well, you can bring over your family in one trip.
Moving to the islands is not an inexpensive venture either if you plan to move items. It takes some time to ship pallets of items over the islands too, so definitely have that wrapped up before you go. It may be the family leaving a bit later would work here too since it sometimes takes weeks to get your personal belongings moved out there. Of course, if you don't plan on taking more than can fit in luggage, then this is a mute point.
Have you checked some of the reputable job hiring sites, btw? Craigslist is often filled with scammers and, although the community there will do their best to flag posts, the scammers are relentless and disease that landscape terribly. Reputable job sites are better, really, but go that route with caution as well. Of course, if you work in the retail industry with companies like Home Depot, Costco, etc, you can always check their sites for job ops on the island you are seeking to move to.
We moved from California to North Carolina. Doing that was liberating, but provided challenges. However, I have friends who have done the overseas move as well (including Europe and Japan). Going overseas adds more challenges since you simply cannot just rent a truck and drive off an island. It's obviously doable. However, more planning is needed and required.
Best of success and luck and all that is good on the other side.

I am also moving to Hawaii from Texas. I am moving for school and my happiness. I am having some of the same issues and am looking for as much advice as I can get. I am moving to Oahu on Dec 15th. I am currently in need of a place to live and work. Myself, clothes, maybe my 2 cats and personals are all this is coming with me. I have read a few scary post of people not making it out there, can someone please give me a picture of what I am getting myself into?

Snstgerm, it may be more advantageous to start a new thread in order to solicit the proper responses so that the OP's question is not diluted. However, when you do, post some details (without divulging personal information) on what you have done thus far to research your new move.

My family and I just moved to Hawaii. We sold all our mainland possesions, yet we rented a place on the Craigslist and paid six months of rent in advance to be safe about our job search. We also have two children age 14 and 11. We read some great literature that really helped us get this move done. The best book to get if you are moving to Hawaii is "Affordable Paradise." It has all the info you could ever need about moving to these wonderful Islands. We have had a wonderful time here. This place is very powerful, peaceful, and beautiful. If you want to make it happen then beleive it can happen and it will.
