I read on Wikipedia that cinnamon trees are invasive in Hawaii. Anyone try to harvest it?

For being 'invasive' there sure aren't all that many of them around. Did Wikipedia say which island they're supposed to be invading?

There was an article in West Hawaii Today seven years ago, written by their local agricultural expert. She discussed growing cinnamon trees in Hawaii, so I guess that maybe some people do. No mention of it being invasive.

I've never heard of cinnamon trees being invasive (and we do have a lot of invasives here), so I doubt that it's a problem.

I know folks on the island that grow cinnamon trees in the Puna area. I imagine anything non-native is considered invasive regardless of how prevalent or rare they are.

In the lists I can find, I can't find any member of the Cinnamomum genus listed as either invasive, or naturalized.

Also the word "Hawaii" does not appear on the wikipedia page for cinnamon, Cinnamomum, etc, nor does cinnamon appear in the wiki page for Hawaii invasive species.

Maybe the OP can provide a link. We battle invasive species every day on our farm. I've never gone to war with a cinnamon tree. They like high elevations with warm weather, good drainage, and a lot of rain. If they are invasive they would be in fairly small pockets.

Thanks for the link, but who are they? They have species on their list that are grown commercially.

Agreed I see no way the true cinnamon is an invasive in Hawaii.

Why wouldn't it be - it is native to Asia and grows like a weed

I'm on the Big Island, and have never heard anyone talk about invasive cinnamon trees. Lots of other invasives, but not this one.
