Yes! Mauna Kea means "white mountain." On the Big Island, it's not uncommon to see Mauna Kea (elevation 13,796) covered in snow in the winter -- while it's 80 degress at sea level. People actually ski there.

We also had snow on Haleakala (elevation 10,023 feet) this past November. It's rarer on Maui, but it happens ever 4-5 years. Locals try to brave the roads before they close the park to show their children what snow looks like.

Yeah there is snow on mauna kea every winter. we also get a little bit of snow on mauna loa. last year it hailed in ocen view. You can be at the beach and see snow on the mountain.

So I've always wondered how exactly the skiers and snowboarders go about the task. Is there a chairlift somewhere, do they hike up the volcano, heli-ski, something else I'm not thinking of?

usally someone drives them to the top and they pick them up at the bottom and drive them back up.
