anther options is to rent a vacation rental. those are nice for the fact you can do it all over the phone. get that.. rented.. and paid for. wile u put everything else in order. IE. long term living arrangements, job, transportation. that kinda thing. i say make it happen. but do ur best to insure you succeed. demographic and economic research, make a budget, see if ur income ud make here support that budget. there is no secret answer. or hidden trick here. u just must excessive extreme motivation as well as extreme discipline. Have to be ready to get ur proverbial hands dirty so to speak. Gas is up to 4 bucks a gallon fyi. Don’t forget to add that to ur budget

we are planning a move to the big island, it don't cost as much to live there. Right now we are in milwaukee and gas prices are the same. Also I hurd the milk is like $8 but we have always bought organic milk from whole foods and its $7 so not such a big diff for us. I think it depends how u live here to if u would be able to make it on your budget. I would findout if they have food stamps or a qwest card there.

Default Really?

Pardon me for saying so, but why would someone move to Hawaii only to seek out Qwest and Food Stamps? I believe that if you're going to move to Hawaii, you move there to live simply, work hard and contribute, not deplete the resources that are in place for the locals living there. If that's the case, why not stay where you are and get on welfare? That just doesn't make sense to me. I'm sorry.

I will be arriving on the island of Oahu on June 29th. I plan to work (2 jobs if I have to) but I'll grow my own food and work some more before I even consider doing something like that. I don't like handouts. People struggle and suffer everywhere and if you're finances are such that you would move on practically nothing and depend on the system to put food in your mouth. You really should rethink this whole thing.

The economic conditions in Hawaii are nothing to sneeze at, we shouldn't take them lightly. It's hard for everyone there, just as it is here on the Mainland, I'm in Denver, Colorado. My mom is there, I'm moving there to be near her. But I'm preparing, focusing, doing tons of research, for 5 months now. It's a big, scary move. One that must be thought out. Expect to get there and pretend that not one single person is going to help you out in any way shape or form....

Would you still want to go then? Don't seek welfare, that's not the way to go. We want to be a blessing to the people of Hawaii, not a burden.

Mahalo~

cant agree more. if u move to hawaii u must help the systems. not exploit them. if u plan on suckin up my tax dollars.. stay were u are. those systems are set in place for the hawaiians born here who have been unable to survive cause of people like me moving here and making the cost of living sky rocket.
i do not mean to sound rude. but what your saying is absurd. besided i think u have to live here for some time befor u can even qualify for anything like that. so keep ya broke *** on the main land... inless u wana get two jobs and bust *** like the rest of us. life here is not a walk in the park. cost of living in paradise is high. and if ur not willing to pay that cost and plan on exploiting a system stay the heck away.

Default Right on!

dmoon808, that's exactly what I tried to convey (only a little nicer!) But you're absolutely right. I think its awful that people do that. It's like they're just looking for paradise and a handout. Impossible. Just impossible. Burdens on society infuriate me, and this sounds so deliberate. Like "oh let me move to paradise and then go straight to the welfare office to see what THEY can do for ME!

That's retarded. Stay home, stay where you're at and get a clue, seriously. That's horrible. It made my heart sad to hear that.

Aloha

brakes my heart man... i hate free loaders.... hawaiians have it tuff enouph with all the transplaints (like me) let alont ones tryn to suck dry there only survival life line.. i cant express how upset ready those words made me.. i am sorry if i sounded rude.. i am not a rude person but what you suggest is truly unfair. if u can afford a $700 u can afford to get a dam job. and if u cant afford to get a job. u cant afford to live here. those systems were not set inplace for people like you to move... i want you to try to look at it from my point of view. uncle sam takes 22% of my check and state of hawaii takes like 19% think about how mad you would be if it were me wasting your tax dollars. and think of the local hawaiians workin 3 jobs and still not makin ends meet who depend on those systems to survive. is it right for u to put ur self next to them?

better you just come here on vacation.. spend all ur money.. and go home

Default Jump in...the water is great!

Aloha Anne...
My goodness...KYUSA and DBM those were cold remarks and unwarranted.

Opportunity abounds in the Islands. Maybe you are set on Oahu for employment reasons or just like it there. You may find other options open for you on a neighboring Island.

You should be able to find lodgings for alot less than $75.00 a night. I found a great hotel on the Big Island for $33.00 a night. The Manago in Captain Cook. Keep looking.

Money is nice, especially if you have it. We don't! My first move to Hawaii was to Maui w/a back pack and about $100 after landing. I ended up in a nice little hotel that led to me owning my own business.

This time around, you know what, we do have a house for some cushion, about another $100.00 after all will be said and done! Bad market, bad mortgage situation.

Life is good in Hawaii. You can live like a King w/little money. Look for rentals via private owners. We are starting w/a turn-key Ohana for about a year or so. We are poor as church mice as well. Personally, I'd rather listen to music by candle light than have electricity burning. I'd rather sit outside in a tropical breeze than inside having my oxygen sucked out by air conditioning.

You can make this move happen. There will always be worry but it doesn't have to be stressful.

Aloha Anne and family.
A hui hou!
Koale

I would suggest that if you are that poor, and cannot be dissuaded by voices of reason, then you should not be looking at Honolulu. I don't know much about Oahu, but maybe looking at some of the more rural areas away from the big city would be cheaper. Of all the islands, the Big Island probably has the most reasonable housing prices, but also the least jobs.

Good luck on your journey. Just remember that living in Paradise is not the same as visiting. Costs of EVERYTHING is higher in Hawaii, although you can shop cheaply for vegetables at the farmer's markets. Even shopping at WalMart and Costco is more expensive than at the same mainland stores. Yes, the beaches are free, but everything else is very expensive.
