The only thing I can think of to help you live there is to see if you can rent a room in somebodys home. But besides that there is the factor of getting there ... Will you be able to afford the plane ticket on a shoe string budget? Your bags will cost money too. If you are set on going I would look into ecxactly how much you will need a month then see if you can save up that x3 that way you have money to rent a place and have 3 months to find a job. This would be cutting it close though, assuming you will be able to find a job in that amount of time. You will need to be VERY determine and if it is your dream than u can make it happen, but pleez don't go empty handed, some people may be able to make it comming up from having nothing, but most of them will end up going back were they came from even more broke. I would wait there till u can save enough to be set for a few months, at the least

Hi all

well I really have an aray of opinions given here! I didn't know that one little question would cause such a stir!

No I wont go on food stamps.never have been, never will..even when I was a single mom raising my daughter alone..

Listening to voices of reason..hmmm...

I only listen to the voices in my head! LOL

We are only interested iin Oahu..haven't been to any other island.

Through the years I've kept in touch with people...and then lost touch..but they always told me and showed me where to shop...

which I still do to this day...the locals are just as broke as we are!

thanks to all that have responded...

my husband and i have four kids and are also wanting to take the leap. we to live on a shoestring budget. it would be so wonderful to live somewhere so beautiful. we would be moving from nebraska. but the more i read and the more i search for houses my dream is being crushed. the housing is terriable, just to get a nice house it will cost you any where from 400,000 to 100,000,000. the schools pretty much such from what i hear and the locals can be pretty bad to outsiders. I never been there and would love to live there but with kids i am starting to second guess it. if you know somewhere as nice and beautiful to live other than hawaii let me know.

I remember reading somewhere that there is a company that charters flights that allows your dog to sit right beside you...

does anyone have any knowledge about the company? that would be nice. I worry about putting Charley in the cargo...I've seen what they do to my luggage!

1. Plane Tickets $$$$$
Transportation Costs can vary but be ready to pay $1000 dollar per person just to get to the island of your choice. Once you are in hawaii it will cost you $150 to $200 to move from Island to Island.

2. Hotel/Apartment $$$$$
You need to find a place before you go overthere, otherwise you will have to spend a considerable amount of money paying for rent, or if you take the unexpensive rout of renting in a hostel, you will have to pray for vacancy and be ready to live unconfortably for a while. Expect to pay $25 to $75 per day in a hostel.

3. Transportation
Once you arrive in the island you will have to rent a car. $70+ a day.

4. Food
Need to eat $20 dollar a day. Unless you like sea food.

5. Deposit
Once you find an unexpensive apartment be ready to pay a deposit. If you find an apartment for about $600 a month they usually ask for $300 downpayment.

6. Time
Apartment hunting, Job hunting, takes time, time costs money, Food, transportation, phone calls, unexpected illness, unexpected expenses, and many things.

I wish you luck
