views on breastfeeding in Hawaii
Aloha! I was just wondering what are the views on breastfeeding or extended bf-ing and attatchment parenting in Hawaii? I just ask because I had a bad experience when my son was two months old and I was breastfeeding him in a pediatric waiting room. The nurse said I would have to leave the building to do that. since we are planning to move this fall and also plan on having another baby next year just wondering what I can expect

I never heard of anything like that. They didn't have any right to say that to you. What did your pediatrician say when you told him?

he said it was public exposure which is not allowed, wisconsin doesn't have good laws for bf-ing mothers so there was not much I could do. I just said to the nurse that this is how I feed my baby and ian not going to stop or leave intill it apt is over. I normally have to wait 29 mins that day it was like 10. I wrote them a letter and changed to a dr who practices natural living, he doesn't push vaccinations or medicine. I will miss him when we do move since he is the only family dr I could find that I liked

Good for you. I'm glad you didn't take that crap lying down. It's hard for me to imagine Hawaiians behaving that way. They seem so natural and unaffected.

Good, man I can't wait to move I rilli can't stand the way people live here. Dispespectful and igroant twords the natural ways of life. I meet barely anyone with the smart views as me. I have a friend that thinks global warming is a made up scam along with organic foods and clothing. Most people that live here are like that though. They will argue that formula is the same thing as breastmilk and it doesn't matter what type of foods you eat, weather its GM or not ... Ill be happy when I can just grow my own food

Public Point of View...
Well, as long as you show common courtesy and have yourself covered I doubt anyone has a problem with BF. A simple blanket or sweater over your shoulder does the trick. It shows respect for yourself, your baby and everyone else. It's the mothers that feel the need to act as exhibitionists and expose themselves to everyone in the room that causes a rucus.
I, personally, have asked several of those Mothers to either cover their exposed breast or leave the vacinity. And I make a stink until they do.
It would be kind of like me exposing my ******* just because I wanted to get a reaction... how would you like it? How would you react? It's a natural reaction for men to need to breath when it's warm.

FYI I do cover up, but when its 99 degrees you cant cuz the baby will get overheated. Its less exposure than you will see on the beach or ever a low cut shirt.

also breasts are used for feeding babies, not ur ******* so no its not the same. And no one nurses their kid for attention, its just that they need to be fed. Wow that response was offensive in the end

Y'all need to get educated on breastfeeding and breasts in general!
See: http://www.breastfeeding.com/ for some education!
From Abbott Labs, a leading manufacturer of infant formulas at

We agree with leading medical and health organizations throughout the world that breastfeeding is the best form of infant nutrition and should be the first choice for babies.

The attitude toward breasts in general is strange - even though men can go topless, lots of places don't even want men's nipples to be seen. See: http://www.topfree.ca/ .
I would also direct you to the 2007 September 21 entry on this page for a great view of just what has been said here in opposition to breastfeeding in public.
It is legal for women to be topless here, Columbus, Ohio - see: http://www.comfest.com/rules.htm , and quite a few other states. Google a bit to see the attitudes of different states.
Oh, and just to clear up any questions, I am a 70 year old male who was breastfed as an infant, and as far as I know it was more commonly seen then as a necessity if you wanted your baby to eat.
