do you have more then $200k in the bank? i think that's what the bank means FDIC covers up to $200k per account. hope that helps.

If you have multiple accounts with that bank or even share an additional account with a spouce or child maybe...those accounts are insured up to a combined $100/$200K... I may have misunderstood your comment, but if not hopefully this helps.

yeah, i think i was misunderstood. the situation, as i understand it from the contract from the escrow, is the foll:
they own the bank account, not me. say i give escrow $250k to buy a house, and someone else gives escrow $300k for another house, escrow says they can't guarantee all $550k would be FDIC insured since that's above the upper limit. i guess such a risk was/is always there (never thought of it that way), but is made worse with the current rate of bank failures.

I have lived in Hawaii (Oahu - Aiea) off and on for 10 years. I am now in Cedar Park, TX (outside of Austin) and I'm missing Hawaii terribly. I too plan on returning this year, probably late Summer, this time for good.

Yes, I can completely relate. That's how I feel about Southern Calif. Anyway, is it impossible for anyone on a fixed income to live in HI? Are the rents just too too high? I know it's beautiful there (from photos), but what area would you recommend for living? Is the climate always temperate? Any humidity? Are the locals friendly to newcomers, or no?

To Avalon08, It will be tough on a fixed income (depending upon the amount), but it can and is being done. The single most expensive piece is housing. Depending upon your age, there is some subsidized units; but also, if you shop around, you can find something in Western part of the Oahu. It can get a little rough (neighborhood-wise) the further West you go, but you know some of the nicest folks live West. Look in Waipahu (Royal Kunia, Waipio Gentry, Waikele, and Mililani -though that's more central). You might look on the Windward side of Oahu as well around Kaneohe - where rents may be affordable. Food can be costly, so shop at Wal-Mart (use to be cheapest Milk around at $2.80 per gallon), COSTCO and Sam's Club. If you are eligible use the military base commissaries. As for medical, I get mine through the Fed Government, and I found Kaiser Permanente was the most cost effective at $156 for a family coverage.
I tell ya, though, it's nothing like Living Aloha! Even in traffic jams, you're looking at the blue ocean and palm trees.
Good Luck.

This past month, my son and his wife threw in the towel after living 17 years on the Big Island. The economy is tanking really bad and the VOG is really starting to give people breathing problems.
