Car rentals for $16 or $17 per day in Oahu?
Aloha everyone,
I am coming to Oahu for a month in July to feel out a probable move in January of '09, and wondering if anyone on the forum can recommend a good, cheap car rental place.
I keep seeing ads on Craigslist for A-1 Rent a Car (3365 N. Nimitz Highway, 833-7575) advertising $17 per day rentals for 30 days or more at economy rates, which is great, but their website only shows a few photos and gives the number to call (no reservation system online), and I guess I've heard enough about CL scams to think twice when there isn't much info to go on and this obviously is an indie place, not a chain.
Thanks for any help you can give me! I've learned a lot over the past few months reading posts on this forum.

car rentals
Sorry, don't know about rentals in that price range, but did find www.discounthawaiicarrentals.com and got rental for $28/day. Thrifty worked out the best, as it had a Waikiki location on Seaside that worked well for us. To avoid parking fees, we rented by the day, and dropped it off to them in the evening, and picked up another in the am. There was another cheap-sounding place on Beachwalk, but we didn't investigate it further.

I don't know if you want to handle the risks of renting from one of those guys. I would be worried about safety, reliability, etc. You could consider a moped which would be viable for the price if not less. Unless you plan to travel outside of the "city" area, The Bus would also be good. Cheap, relatively quick and convenient around town.

I am renting a car next week for $23 through Costco.
Try Priceline, name your price....you can find great deals there.

Thanks for the advice...
Hello to all and thanks for the good advice on being wary of the cheap car rentals. I did end up renting from a very inexpensive place on Oahu, but would not recommend them. The car I got had really dark tinting applied to the windows that made it hard to see out the back window (blurry) and the windows were so dark I felt uncomfortable driving after dusk. Others noticed it too. The car also scraped the ground any time there was more than a low speed bump or tiny dip in the driveway-to-street angle.
When I requested a different car, I was told the only one that was available had no air conditioning, but when I went to check it out, I found it also had no working horn, imperative in my opinion. At the same time I was there another guy was trying to trade in his rental because it kept overheating. A great price does NOT mean a great car and I learned my lesson. Good luck out there!

Cheap Car Rentals
I highly recommend you try "Priceline.com" and bid for a car rental. Start at $15.00 and you'll get a decent car with taxes, etc and it'll be only $25.00/day from a reputable car rental place. I got one nice compact for $25 total and another time a Toyota Mini-van with GPS and everything else for $27.00! ;-)
