With respect JoeyT, it seems like you are asking why the state of Hawaii doesn't make it easy for you to live without paying taxes or utility bills. Why exactly should they do that? RV camping is generally intended as a vacation activity, and you seem to want to move over here and live in an RV, traveling around to different parks. That's nice for you, but not sure that's so nice for anyone else involved.
I sure hope you are kidding about dumping your waste in anyone's yard, or out in anywhere remote. Please don't consider moving here to make the very things that attract you into a filthy dump. "Remote" doesn't mean it isn't owned by someone, nor that they don't care about the conditions. A wide expanse of nature doesn't mean anyone is free to just move in. Just because you have an extra bedroom does that mean someone who is homeless can come sleep in it and take a crap in your yard? I think not.
At least be honest with yourself and the rest of us - you are trying to lessen the cost of living for yourself, exploring if living in an RV is the way to do this. But please don't try to have us taxpayers (especially homeowners taxes) pay for your living cheap. That's your decision and your burden.

ohhh..ohhh....Calico! I think you're taking me far too seriously. My question about why the authorities allow RV's was more ideological, than wanting to really. Ask anyone around here. They know I make lots of inquiries about lots of things. No, I don't intend to live in an RV there. Just trying to make conversaion. If I ruffled your feathers I apologize.

Hmmm, I guess I misunderstood when you wrote,
"This may sound like it's coming from way out in left field, but is it possible, because of the high housing costs, to live in a nice RV in Oahu or Maui?"

JoeyT,
I'm the lady that Hank responded to originally on the RV (Thanks, Hank!). We were toying with the idea of bringing our RV to Oahu (not to live, only maybe for a week or two until we find a real place for us and out dog) but it was really ideal if we could pack it in with our belongings and ship it and then sell it once we got to Oahu. But that 'dream' soon fizzled because #1 I haven't found a shipping company that will allow you to pack in a vehicle full of your belongings #2 almost 0 demand for RVs in Oahu #3 nowhere to park it long term unless you own property. It's still a possibility, but chances are looking slim.
But in terms of full on LIVING in an RV in Oahu, I think you'll find that it'll be almost impossible especially with 0 facilities that provides all the hook ups. But I did see in my research that living in an RV is more common on the Big Island. Don't know if they have hook up facilities there, didn't dig that deep, but definitely saw demand for RVs there.

Nah ... not really ... just a few here and there ... and no one "lives" in them on the road as a lifestyle there. B.I. is big, but not that big ... you can drive the whole thing in one very long day, you know ... you'll run out of vistas to enjoy with an RV in no time ... and there are no hook-ups there either. And RV's don't last long ANYplace in Hawaii ... climate eats them ... literally. There are a few folks using them short-term in areas like the Puna District. That's about it.

I think it did? It was like a house, in a tree. Well more like a studio. It wasnt like a kids club house or anything. I think it was like $400 a month or less. Somthing like that just sounds more doable than the RV thing, or at least more excepted. if we didn't have a two year old it would be pretty fun to try out.

ok I looked on craigslist but it was gone. I did find another one that was cheaper and didn't look as nice though. Its in keaau, $295 a month. So just type 295 for the rent part and you can find it if you want. There are a few really cheap, camping looking places. They are mostly solar powered, some have water generator things. Some have working toilets, alot have outdoor showers. But if you are looking for a different way of life, a very simple way then I would check it out.
