Default Moving to Molokai have ?

Me and my husband are moving to Molokai next month and trying to find out what the cost of living is going to be like there and what to expect.

We will be working for a company that will initially pay our cost of housing for the first 6 months but after that we have to pick up the bill. We plan on renting .. buying at this point is not an option for us. But we have been trying to find out how much some the basic things will differ for us.

We have sold most of our belongings here and plan to live in a fully furnished appt/condo. We know we will have to initially buy all the basic foods/supplies. We do plan on shipping over a few boxes thru UPS, our computer, extra clothing, somehousehold items, etc.. but wondering what things can we expect to find or Not find on the island.

Been trying to find out also how much the cost is for local ferry and transportation on the island.

Anyone got any good advice or suggestions ??

If you don't get responses from someone here who is on Molokai, you might just wander around the Molokai page of Craigslist. The services section and apts section, (and some others) might give you an idea of what you will find there:

craigslist: molokai classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events

Why was Molokai never developed like Maui since they both compliment each other so well. Ordinances?

There are no major chain stores on Molokai -- grocery or general merchandise, so I would plan to ship anything that you use day-to-day that is not furnished in the condo (kitchen appliances, tools, etc.), as the selection and sources are limited. You'll likely find what you need, you just won't have trouble choosing between models. The grocery stores are amazing -- merchandise from floor-to-ceiling, hardware and fishing tackle, and everybody in town ends up there.

The ferry runs from Lahaina to Kaunakakai Monday through Saturday, the web site is here:Maui Molokai Ferry, Molokai Princess Kaluakoi Golf Course Golf Package Things are pretty spread out, so you will need a car or truck.

It's beautiful there.

Default thanks for help

Thanks for the Info.. Work will be providing me a truck to get around on the island with so that will alleviate that. We will only be living for first 3 months on Molokai then moving for about 2-3 months on Lanai, doing the same work then moving Again to Maui for about 9-12 months before we move back to Molokai to start all over again.. Thankfully like I mentioned earlier tho work will be paying for all living expenses on the 2 smaller islands we just have to come up with the cash when we live on Maui

Seems we wont be making a lot of trips to early with the cost of the ferry but we will def. be buying the 6 trip pack to save cash.

I think for the most part it sounds like it is very similar to where we are living at now... very small and not a lot of stores etc.. mostly scenic and outdoors.

Default What an adventure!

I envy your having time on each island to really learn your way around and get to know some folks. Lana`i is both like and unlike Moloka`i; Maui is very different from either. Don't miss the East End drive on Moloka`i to Halawa Falls. I think it rivals Maui's drive to Hana. Check back in when you've gotten settled -- we'd love to know how it goes.

E komo mai.

I really second that. Most of us who live on Oahu or the Big Island have only seen Maui, and maybe Molokai or Lanai, as "tourists". I'd REALLY like to know your impressions of the island, the people, the living, on each island, when you have come to know them all as well as I'm sure you will!

Please come back and post here then.

Mahalo in advance.

Hank
