Information on Lava Zones in Hawaii
I'm trying to find out if a property in Pahoa is in zone 1,2, or 3. It's on Hapuu Rd. I would appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction to determine this. Thanks.

My map book shows 6 possible Hapuu s. Do you know the subdivision or TMK number of the parcel?

If it's the Hapu'u Road in Nanawale Estates, then it's in lava zone 2.

If it's in Leilani Estates, it's lava zone 1.
Below is a quick list of some of the larger subdivisions in Puna and the lava zones they're in...
Lava zone 1: Leilani Estates, Kapoho
Lava zone 2: Black Sand Beach, Nanawale Estates, Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Shores, Hawaiian Parks, Kehena, Puna Beach Palisades, Kalapana Seaview Estates, Kaimu-Makena Houselots. Pahoa is also in this lava zone.
Lava zone 3: Ainaloa, Tiki Gardens, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiian Acres, Fern Acres, Eden Roc Estates, Fern Forest Estates, Aloha Estates, Glenwood Estates, Ohia Estates, Mauna Loa Estates. Kea'au and Volcano are also in this zone.

You also have to be within a certain distance to a fire station to get some bank loans as well as lower insurance rates. Half of Nanawale is within that distance and half isn't. I'm not sure about Leilani.
I'm not sure if Pele actually pays attention to these lava zones, though. She almost ate Hilo several decades ago and they generally don't even show up on the lava zone charts.

Actually, Hilo (lava zone 3) does show up on the USGS "Lava Flow Hazard Zone" maps.
Here's a link....
Volcanic and Seismic Hazards on the Island of Hawaii: Lava Flow Hazard Zone Maps
Ironically, most of the structures recently damaged or destroyed by lava have been in lava zone 2, which kind of proves that Pele doesn't really care what the USGS thinks....

Don't forget Google Earth overlay...you just have to install Google Earth on your computer first.
Using Google Earth to determine Lava Flow Hazard Zones for Hawai`i County
....This Volcano Watch Article announces the release of the first Google Earth mapping file made available by HVO: one that displays Lava Flow Hazard Zones for the County of Hawai`i on the Google Earth base. If you can find your house or even your neighborhood on Google Earth, you’ll be able to use this overlay to see what Lava Flow Hazard Zone you are in. Install Google Earth if you haven’t already done so and click on http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/hazards/lavaz...azardZones.kmz to view the Lava Flow Hazard Zones for Hawai`i County.....
As with most "easy to find" data, you will want to verify any information you gather from Google Earth!
