WHAT! 80MPH - Here in LuLu land of Hono city and county I'am doing 65-70 and being passed by autos AND trucks.
One would have to be going from CA to NY to gain any 'time' by driving "fast".
Every one here wont's to leave tomorrow and arrive yesterday. More and more are arriving at the graveyard.

I have nothing against tourists.......they rarely smile at you, if you say "Hello" or "Aloha" to them they give you this strange look, kind of like "what's he want??", they drive like either maniacs or lunatics, (thanks for that one Mad Russian and George Carlin), the majority of them are just downright impolite, and they have this "I've paid to be here, I'm gonna do what I want!!!", attitude. Had some folks renting the condo next door to me a few years ago, they're partying well into the wee hours every night, hooting and hollering, having a great time, but not showing any consideration for their neighbors, I have to be up every morning around 5:00 AM, so it's getting to be a pain in the okole. Get off work early one day because of a rain out, there's this box on my lanai, filled with beer and scotch, the good stuff, and a card with the Wells Fargo Bank logo on it, "Sorry if we were a little loud, hopefully this will make up for it", the guys were all bank managers from Arizona,,,,,,,,,now, if every tourist were to behave like that?????????
After over thirty years here you start to see things just a little differently..
Aloha

The Tourist Economy - Why?

All we see is the minimum wage hotel work/bus driver/wait help jobs. We then have all these tourists competing for space on/in our roads, restaurants, beaches, parks, clinics, etc. Of course it is a love/hate relationship with tourists. All residents of Hawaii put up with them on a daily basis - such as driving with them on the roads - even if we don't directly work in the tourist industry.

If the tourist economy bothers you, vote in some legislators that are business friendly.
Here's my take on that, in a thread from about a year ago:

I'm hoping for diversified agriculture as the type of new business being made. Personally, I'd like to see a whole lot of little businesses, not several big ones. We did the cane companies already and that had a lot of folks working for small money. Now there is a lot of good farmland covered with trees and there's no forestry industry in sight. We can't compete with other places in volume of trees yet the native species of trees which would be good for artisans to make furniture and high value items from weren't planted. Doesn't make any sense to me, but they didn't ask me when they decided to plant trees.
I am beginning to see folks starting small agriculturally bases businesses. Goat dairies, bee farms, small organic egg farms, fish farming, hydroponic lettuce and tomatoes, etc. I think growing food is a great thing to do. Soon there will be enough folks growing food that we will be able to support agricultural processing facilities and tractor dealerships.
I would also like to see some change in zoning to allow self contained villages and what would be a really good thing for driving in Hawaii is special "Slow Roads". Roads especially for folks who want to drive slowly. Bicycles, goat carts, mopeds, pedestrians, horses - basically anyone who wants to go less than 35 mph. Then those crazy folk can zoom about on the highway and the rest of us can meander along the scenic route.
