Default Tips of living affordably on Big Island

We recently moved to Hilo and I'm nervous about how we're going to get by. My husband's job makes decent money but it looks like things will be pretty tight. So, I'd like any suggestions on ways to save money in this area.

You might want to check out the book "Affordable Paradise." When I got it, I was disappointed because the subtitle was "Tips for Affordable Living in Hawaii" but it should really be "Tips for Affordable Living on Hawaii". It's not a great book, but it does have a lot of specifics about the Big Island, so you might find it useful. Heck, send me a private message with your address, and I'll send you my copy! I sure don't need it.

Eat local. The Hilo Farmer's market and your neighbor's avocado tree are your friends. The bread thrift shop is next to Freddy's on Manono street. Fresh fish from Suisan over by the boat harbor (Hilo side of Banyan Drive where the hotels are) is a good place to get fresh fish. Garage sales are good and Hilo isn't a dress up place anyway.
